Hello everyone.
I've been using my N900 for the last 4-5 years, some issues along the way of course, was able to find solutions here, but this time i'm stuck and in need of your advice.
Status bar has disappeared, only network name is shown at the top , i can see device connects to Wi-Fi, notifications about emails and messages pops out, but freezes when trying to open them or launch any programs or settings app..
Tried to reset via battery out and charger in, tried apt-get install --reinstall hildon-desktop, nothing helps... I will leave re-flashing as the very last measure, i had it perfectly (almost) configured for my needs and it would be a reall headache to start everything from scratch..
The phone is useless the way it is now, your help would be very much appreciated

Quick reply...
You could try:
Code:
killall hildon-desktop
killall hildon-home
killall hildon-status-menu
to see if they restart.

Have you taken the battery out for a minute then restarted?
Is this problem similar?
Best wishes. I wish I could offer more assistance.

Hi Wikiwide. Thank you, i've tried that already, they do restart but the glitch remains...

Yes, this problem seems to be very similar.

Im afraid to say you need a reflash or restoring a proper backup with backupmenu
Good luck

Thank you sifo, i guess it might be the only way...

Anyhow, UPDATE:
With system sounds disabled (silent profile) i was able to launch few apps like Contacts (so i can export all contacts before reflash), App Manager too, now trying to delete some apps now... see if it helps...

Maybe someone could tell me the command on xterm to list all installed apps?

For getting the installed apps names
Code:
dpkg --get-selections >/home/user/MyDocs/myapplist.txt
then you'll have a new file in MyDocs containing your app list named myapplist.txt
if you only want to display the apps names in terminal
Code:
dpkg --get-selections
good luck
( thanks to don_falcone because he pointed me to this command )

Edit : when you want to reinstall the apps in that list just follow the command on this post

thank you very much for your help.
another two questions if you someone could...
1. nothing happens when i try connect the phone to laptop via usb (so i could copy the contents of phone memory). the option whether to connect as usb storage or suite doesn't appear, is there a command on xterm to force the device to connect in usb mode or a command to make device use mass storage mode as default?
2. is it possible to flash only the operating system, so that documents and pictures remain in memory?..
