Maybeyou could use
/usr/bin/play-sound,
haven't tried yet.

Here is how...

Gain root in xterm
Than use apt-get...

apt-get install gstreamer0.10-tools

Once install go to claws-mail --- Prefrences --- Receving ---- Enable "Execute Command" and put...

gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location=/usr/share/sounds/pickyour-sound.wav ! wavparse ! dsppcmsink

Done!
