I think it is time to actually start doing things.

We need a minimal project infrastructure - wiki, mailing list, issue/task tracker.

Where to host that? alioth.debian.org? garage.maemo.org? Elsewhere?

I have requested a pkg-meego project on Alioth. But before anything can be done, we have to wait until meego.com finally publishes source code, etc (probably March).

I've set up a preliminary wiki page http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_on_Debian
I think garage.maemo.org is only for Maemo software and therefore too limited in scope.
It would be great if we can use the existing Debian infrastructure.

We should decide for a name for the project before we create and announce the project publicly.

I think this project will be more than the sum of Maemo5, MeeGo and Debian.
It should also not be limited to the N900.
So it deserves its own, hopefully catchy name.

Someone already suggested "Maebian", but that seems to leave out MeeGo from Maemo+Debian.

Another idea would be "Moebian".
"Mo" refers to mobile, "bian"=Debian base,
"a" and "e" were already used by Maemo and Meego,
and it suggests a nice logo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Möbius_strip
(and I guess Jeff Moe would be proud )
what do you think?

Any other ideas?

we already have a lot to do for integrating Maemo5 and Debian on the N900.
MeeGo would be the next step and I guess Harmattan will already provide most the packaging for us. We could also try to import the Moblin packages from the Ubuntu Netbook edition.

I've added some implementation plan to the wiki page. Please review.

If there are multiple DD's interested in this, we should organise a BoF session at the upcoming DebConf this summer as well, to discuss all the technical and organising details.

I hope that by summer, the integration of Maemo and Debian is already finished and that we can already begin with integrating MeeGo.

Packaging stuff from Maemo 5 is not part of my agenda, and is already done to a certain extent (e.g. hildon) by the pkg-maemo team on Alioth (pkg-maemo-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org).

My goal is to package bits from meego.com, and parts needed to boot Debian on the N900; and install this onto the eMMC. This is a relatively simple and straight forward task. And many things, such as oFono, are already packaged.

The project is not end-user oriented (at least not before Q3/2010), but completely Developer oriented. The first stable release with MeeGo packages (Debian 7.0) will be in 2012 anyway.

A plan could look like:
(1) Get Debian to boot into X Server [March]
(2) Get Debian to run the MeeGo User Experience [April or later]

Alioth will provide git repositories and mailing lists; and that's all that is needed for this project.
