The problem is you have to think that Maemo was headed to greatness under the leadership of Nokia and that Microsoft actually saw this as a threat.

Both those are unlikely assumptions.

Maybe I'm stupid but why can't the screen resolution be easily calculated if someone has the hardware powered and in hand? Couldn't you just load a couple of Jpegs of known resolution and zoom them...

You need a few things:
You need a USB to serial adapter. I have an el cheapo based upon the FTDI chipset but almost any one should be supported.
You need a way to connect the USB to serial adapter...

I just tested mine. It worked with two wierd keys:
double quotes on the frogpad produced no symbol at all.
The '~' key produced an '*' the N800.

I'm working with Frogpad to do the next...
