Basically, with the N900, as soon as you started media player, it would show you all NAS' and DLNA media libraries, and you could just play them straightaway, but how can i get the N9 to do this?

Im not sure you can. I use the stock browser to view and play the media files on my nas server. Works ok apart from the obvious logging in each time.
