yes....your N900 will stop working soon. this is the first sign that the processor is melting.it will also destroy both the internal drive and the SD card. you should start looking for a new phone.

HIGHLIGHT HERE FOR DETAILS:
just kidding...your phone is alright. just the battery module is not loaded. you do that in the cpufreq settings

Basically it means the temperature reading module is not loaded in the kernel. I can't remember what the module name is at this stage, but it should be just fine.

If you have QCPUFreq installed you can start the battery bit by
  • opening QCPUFreq
  • tapping on the title bar,
  • selecting settings,
  • enable via check box "Load bq27x00_battery module"
  • save.

...?
If you rebooted and its still "showing temperature" then it IS permanent by my definition. There's other ways to load it that only last until you reboot.
Checking the box to "load bq27x00_battery module" loads a kernel module that lets you read the temperature of the battery. If you still don't understand, try searching for "kernel module" or "rrmod" or "modprobe" on google.
