I am pleased to announce a new release of VNC viewer, version 0.6. 0.5 was released just a few days ago, so what has changed in this release?

* New user interface feature: added ability to choose encoding type. There are three options, all in the options dialog: automatically select, raw, and hextile. Automatic selection is generally best, but if the connection to the server is good, raw may be the best option. For slower speed connections, hextile may be a better option than automatic selection. The most recent choice is preserved across sessions.
* New user interface feature: added ability to get to special keyboard menu from the main menu. Previously, the special keyboard menu was only available from the toolbar by pressing the keyboard toolbar button. However, if the toolbar is not displayed and it is necessary to use a special key, it is inconvenient to cause the toolbar to be displayed. Now, the user can click the main menu drop-down, or, if in full screen mode, hit the menu button, and from there, navigate to the keyboard menu.
* Significant optimizations made to implementation of raw encoding type--should perform a lot better in this release. Additional optimizations were done for the hextile encoding when rotated.
* Power-saving enhancement: if the display is currently blanked (due to system inactivity) or VNC viewer is not the active application, it no longer requests updates from the server, thereby reducing the amount of network traffic when the application is not being used. This change also has power-saving implications. Actually, this change was in 0.5 but it was accidentally left out of 0.5's changelog.

In addition, now there are different packages for the 770 and N800. The problems that users experienced with the 0.5 package on the N800 should be a thing of the past. I don't have an N800 to test on, but my testing in the maemo 3.0 development environment indicates that the N800 package should work fine.

The easiest way to install the latest version is to use the appropriate single-click .install file:

Nokia 770 (maemo 2.0 or 2.1): http://repository.maemo.org/extras/d...viewer.install
Nokia N800 (maemo 3.0): http://repository.maemo.org/extras/d...viewer.install

Alternatively, go to https://garage.maemo.org/projects/vncviewer/ to download the appropriate package from the VNC Viewer Web site. Also, please go to this Web site to submit bugs, feature requests, comments, etc. Detlef and I will read them in this thread, but the Web site is a central repository for such things, and it will be easier to track bugs and feature requests if they are posted to the Web site.

Aaron,

Sweet! Thanks a bunch. Works like a charm. I went a little overboard and picked up Remote Desktop for the Macs I have at home. I use a VNC viewer to connect from my T42 laptop and now I even have a way of remoting in from the N800. Pretty cool stuff.

I second that, just updated from 0.4 to 0.6: The image refresh speed is very much improved which makes controlling a PC remotely with my Nokia 770 a pleasure. Thank you AaronL.

It's the applications that run on the Nokia Internet Tablets that make them a winner, I do hope Nokia is in listen mode and prepared to increase their support to the open source developers!

PS Is anyone up to the challenge of providing a GUI to Hamachi for Maemo?

Extremely OT of me, but yes: based loosely on HamPy.

Kudos on 0.6! One of my favorite 770 apps.

Hampy http://code.google.com/p/hampy/wiki/Main and/or ghamachi http://www.penguinbyte.com/software/ghamachi/ are Linux hamachi GUI's for the typical desktop, It would be great to have a similar GUI interface that runs on the Nokia 770 or N800 which controls the tuncfg and hamachi command line arguments.
(Without worrying about root access installing tar files and running from xterm etc)

Previous Hamachi forum posts:-

Hamachi is simple to set-up and run on Linux and windows desktops via the GUI interface, it needs to be as simple on the Nokia Internet tablets.

I note aleksandyr that you talk about mhamachi in one of the forum threads above, can you tell us more about it?

PS I notice there has been a bugfix update to Hamachi (Commmand line app) for the Nokia 770 dated 5th Jan 2007. http://files.hamachi.cc/linux/nokia%2D770/

Just to be clear, most of the optizations were in the 0.5 release, and while Detlef and I discussed some ideas for optimizations, he did pretty much all of the investigation and work. So, credit for the optimizations, plus the support for the hextile encoding type, should be given to Detlef, not me. Detlef joined the VNC viewer effort around October of last year, and we have been working on it together since the end of last year.

Also, any chance that the Hamachi discussion can be moved to a new thread?

Thanks,
Aaron

Thanks for the bug report. Other people have reported the same problem. Here's my response to another user:

The "thumb" keyboard is coming up instead of the standard keyboard because you most likely have the "Launch via rocker key" setting set. This means that any time you press the "Enter" hardware key, the thumb keyboard will be displayed.

You can turn off this setting as follows:
1. Cause the virtual keyboard to be displayed.
2. Click on the menu button on the virtual keyboard, then go to Tools->Settings.
3. In the "Text input settings" dialog, select the "Finger" tab, and uncheck "Launch via rocker key".

The problem should now be solved.

VNC viewer has some issues when used with the thumb keyboard, but at the same time, the only way to use the thumb keyboard with VNC viewer is to have that setting checked.

Please let me know if this fixes your problem.

Regards,
AaronL

Version 0.6 successfully installed. UltraVNC is the server that is installed on the machines I need to remote. Other people maintain the servers, I am only a user and have very little control of the software installations. When I try to connect to one of the servers (that I have no problem connecting to from my laptop or Axim x51v) I get “could not connect to server” message.

Any ideas?

Thank you
