What I've read about the N810 has impressed me greatly, and I popped into a shop to try one out today. Nice machine! And what a screen. Since I use linux exclusively, both at home and at work, the opportunity of a handheld linux machine is an added bonus.

However, I can't find out what apps will or won't run, or can or can't be ported to, the N810.

An especial interest for me would be scientific apps: calculators, graphics and symbolic software (like Maxima, Axiom, Yacas), or numeric software like Scilab or Octave.

Has anybody got experience running scientific/math software on the N810 - and does it do this job reasonably well?

Thanks,
-A.

While I wish I could run Maple, MathCad, Mathematica, or Matlab, there are a few math/science applcations that run nicely on my N800.

Each picture worth a thousand words?

(Mathematica 3.0 and Mathcad 6 has problems on the current build of Basilisk II for OS 2008, but Maple V runs semi-O.K.)

ANNOUNCE: Mephemeris - Astronomy Program
Just here! my new Reopository for chinook
New port : TiEmu 2 (Screen rotation or real keyboard requiered)
etc.

Most of the stuff I usually need runs nicely:

emacs23 with tools and extensions
maemotex
R (Statistics and graphics)
gnuplot, phreeqc (geochemical) and cxtfit (hydrogeological simulation)

Due to space restrictions all packages reside under /usr/local which is symlinked to a ext3-formatted partition on the external card.

Do expect some delays for initial startup, after that even simulations run reasonably fast.

I ported a new version... of wxMaxima for maemo... this uses wxwidgets 2.8.8, I working on have wxwidgets 2.9.0-svn ... working... because it has full hildon support

I ported NSP2, this is a Mathlab like application... not a clone like Octave... NSP2 is very fast.. and have better functions...

Please use maemo extras. Especially wxwidgets 2.9.0-svn would be great.

Octave works fine (bit slow though), Yacas also works fine. Someone should add them to extras (bit busy atm) - they are both simple compiles.

Glad to see that working finally on ARM, I never did get it to cross-compile correctly using OE.

There is also x48, an hp48 emulator http://yannbng.free.fr/Maemo/x48_0.4.3_armel.deb It runs slow, and it doesn't seem to work after the diablo upgrade. Anyone with Diablo want to give this emulator a try?

I got maple v3 for DOS running under DOSBOX, it runs slow and is difficult to make inputs with.

EDIT: wxmaxima is great! I had some trouble adding its catalog though. What worked for me is:

Catalog name: Anunakin
Web address: http://maemo.vivaphp.net
Distribution: /pool/

I updated one of my N800 NITs to Diablo, and since then have lost the Free42 app. Things I have read state that Free42 will work with this OS, but after numerous different attempts, I have had no success installing it.

I really love Free42. Any assistance / advice in getting it running again would be greatly appreciated.

I read your post and installed free42 successfully. Play with it for a few minutes, did not notice anything is NOT working.
Your installation problem may be because of maemo was down in the past, try again now. I just did it.
I am running 4.2008.30-2 on N810. Not much of a help, uh?
