Can you use the Googletalk chat client that is built into the software. I haven't used twitter in a while but that used to work?

You might try mitter. I have not used it myself, but I've seen it mentioned on Twitter.

I'm interested in this as well, but I haven't any skill in python or programming on the tablets. Maybe someone will make an installable deb package at some point.

el qwerty is just too good

I learnt how to package a python program (thanks Gene Cash!) and here is a quick build I've done.

Nothing modified so it may or may not work.

It doesn't come with a panel icon, I've attached mine. Just change the .txt extention to .desktop and save it to /usr/share/applications/hildon/
