That makes sense, as does Ulysses' solution.
I looked on the Gronmayer site and found two instances of gzip, in the Maemo Chinook and the Temp Fix for Maemo Chinook repositories. I don't know if either is the one Ulysses refers to (it seems too soon since his post is timestamped early this morning) but even so, gzip does not appear in Application Manager after refreshing. I don't understand why or how I can force them to appear.
How can I find out where the applications that apt-get is installing come from? Also, what are all the things it's trying to remove? I still don't get waht's going on there.

gzip -h is useless. When I tried to update gzip with apt-get, I got the following scary message:
As an aside, it looks like apt-get is accessing different repositories than the GUI application installer. True? (I'm used to ipkg on the Zaurus, where they are the same)
