I don't think the Atom is firmly established as junk for the form factors Atom are in the performance is quite good, even managing to play some older Windows games without problems. The main issue from what I can understand is EFI support. Linux does not support 32 bit EFIs. So make sure whatever Windows Tablet you are buying has a 64 bit EFI and a 64 bit version of Windows. I wasn't able to check as to whether it was 32 bit or 64 bit Windows. There might be some driver issues regardless of what device you are buying, but I can't imagine them being too substantial and if there are there are probably workarounds.
64 bit EFI is out - I have run Debian Solydx and Tails on my Iconia, but there are so many other ghastly issues involved I am tempted to make a blender advertisement out of it.
I see the x5 you mention in the lilliputing page,
I will check around and see if I can get my hands on one or something like it here and see what I can spool up on it.
