I have had enough fun working with art in VR ...
I still do a piece or two now and then...
But I would rather make real pieces...than illusory ..and non tangible..
Yes it is fun tech...
I would hope it progresses past the novelty stage.
Then I would devote time to it..
Until that happens...
I am happy to keep making sculptures...carve...paint..make harps...and work on centuries old weapons curios and antiquities ..and restore them.....
For me...at this point ...
THAT is much more fun...

I'm trying to understand what you mean by "commonplace"
Why is that bad? If Linux was commonplace we'd all be happier here in maemoland. For me it's ok if it is commonplace. Just depends on what you personally do with it. But maybe you mean something else.

the novelty will wear off....I am sure...and people will naturally continue to wish for something else ..or something more to fill their lives with.

That tends to be the natural order of humanity..
Novelty becomes commonplace becomes cast aside for the next "wow" innovation...

The next big thing will start out looking like a toy...

I mean. The "novelty" of a terminal hasn't disappeared in 40+ years.

Anyone with a finger or toe... Can copy paste into a tool like terminal.

I think there is a slight over exaggeration of skill involved comparing direct dimensional work with using terminal.

Well, novelty may be a question of time scale. Something novel could become a useful tool in the long run. When it came out some folks thought the Galaxy Note's pen was a novelty, now many can't live without it. Its been around 8 years. Come to think of it, the human race is kind of a novelty on a cosmic time scale. Something akin to a fad, it will soon be gone as a short lived cosmic blunder.

Edit: I don't actually believe the last sentence. Just added it for dramatic effect!!

A terminal is the basic entry level to create any darn thing you please. It all started there, can be started there or with the plethora of tools that have come along since the terminal. It's your pick.

These dimensional tools for creation. Dunno. I was there when inverse-kinematics became a thing. I was there when motion capture became a thing. I was there when deformation mesh, NURBS, splines and 3D tools became a thing.

And guess what? The complexity of those tools way back then has since been lowered and my teenage son could now create whatever he wants. Sometimes just on his phone.

These things took decades to happen. This is just a drop in the bucket.

I see a long play that doesn't even include me. But damn, I love how it is starting during my time.

Exactly!

Isn't becoming commonplace the ambition of every new thing?

Glamming onto fads as they come and go seems to be the norm here at tmo...
Screaming for the latest...
Then screaming about the cost...
Then screaming about everything from the poor build quality ...right up to the lack of enough support or updates... or both...
Then screaming when it's discontinued...
Then screaming about the competition which is dumbing it down ..pandering to the general population.
Then cyclically..
Screaming yet again ..about the latest...
Perhaps I am being cynical..
Perhaps it will last as a new medium...
But I doubt it. As I mentioned before...
1 studio attempting to introduce or change the format of media...has a snowballs chance in hell...

And perhaps I am just a bit weary of the continuous weekly new tech that draws everyone like a flock of crows to a glass bead...

And yes...
Once a new thing becomes commonplace...
It is on the road to being a given... forgotten...
cast aside or supplanted...by the next.

And a comparison between 40 year old terminal ...
And the oldest and first forms of art and tool making there is...?
The age of terminal is a literal hiccup of time ...in compare...
Let alone comparing it to the ability to do dimensional work...

<sigh>
the majority of my angst ...comes from the fact that..
all the latest and greatest mean very little if I can't even use a functioning linux phone.
We can put a man on the moon..
We can make holographic phones...
But a bloody linux phone that will work?
fremantle has just about had it.
and I am quite tired of waiting for the neo900 to ship (whenever the hell that will be...IF ever that will be...)

I just got a pristine nexus 5 ..
I like the build...
I like the open factor of it as well.
I do not care for the fact the battery is a pain to replace..
Nor the fact it has no sd slot or physik qwerty keyboard.
But I can live with that, considering...

I have been poring through just about everything I can find...
And came to a conclusion.

Sailfish has a few too many issues on the nexus 5 for my liking, also it is too closed up for my liking, and there are elements of real world politics with their own agendas ..spilling in there I do not care for.
Others may love Sailfish...great for them.

CM or any of the dozens of other custom roms out there are fabulous and all...
I would rather have the choice of whether I wish to run an android app or not.

also custom rom's are great and all...most have some small issue or other..but all could never guarantee consistent updates..and that is understandable..
most being made by individuals who are stretched in their ability to do it all by themselves...

However...
Ubuntu Touch and Plasma Mobile have come a long way..
even the most recent updates both have done ...have made a vast difference.

So
I just yesterday bought an additional pair of pristine nexus 5's

I intend on putting Ubuntu Touch on one..
Plasma Mobile on the second...
and ..
If Leste plays out well for the nexus 5 ..
Maemo on the third.
If Leste plays out well for the n900 ...great.

ONE of the OS's has got to survive, grow and prosper... of the 3 ..
the ones that don't..
those nexus units with their builds on them will be relegated to being spare / back up nexus 5's...

I am hedging my bets.
By hook or by crook...I WILL get a fully functioning linux phone back in my hand.

I think writing code can be an artform in itself. Whether its how the code is layed out or the logic. Can be a thing of beauty. All done using a terminal!
