I think they bought this company to augment their lower end phones for emerging markets. Nokia is know for being a patent holding powerhouse, I think the purchase is more about intellectual property than utilization of that OS.

I'm interested by this move - remember Mary McWhatever (in charge of dumb phones) saying in her June speech (just before the official announcement of N9!) that S40 was going to be "the future" of dumb phones because they were going to innovate and invest in that low-end OS.

Maybe they changed their minds and bought Smarterphone, because it has some better UI/UX elements that make S40 look sad and outdated, even for really cheap devices.

Nokia have to do something major in 2012 for the low end, I'm sure people with a tight budget are going to go for that $39 Samsung running Android before they pick a $39 Nokia running S40. Just my 2c

Yeah, nobody wouldn't be interested in that OS and Nokia certainly doesn't need another OS.
But maybe that move shows a stronger orientation of Nokia towards the lowend market. The one where Nokia still is the leading manufacturer.

Symbian lives until 2016. The Qt platform running "internet for the next billion" will certainly not be Symbian at that time, according to Nokia (Qt Dev Days 2011).

If there where not intrests for Nokia they would not buy this OS. It may very will be the OS they will use.

So where or how are Smarterphones sold? Do they have their own territory where they are well known, or are they like HTC back in the day when they would just sell the devices directly to the carriers to be re-badged later on?

If this is the latter, do we know if any of the Smarterphones customers are US carriers? Maybe this is a stealth move to get more sales in the US?

Sorry for three questions in a row, just thinking allowed
