I have this 50-year-old machine that I'm running and I'd say the 10km sprints are needed to keep it running smoothly!

Got a 51 year old machine here...
Still runs well...
feed it homemade cooking only..
make sure it gets plenty of sleep..
and quiet time outside in contemplation..

I never let it sprint though...nor jogging.
Running is one thing...when it is needed ...
Hiking with a backpack.. is better for the body..
That and proper gym at home...
but most important...
Chopping and hauling and stacking firewood...
THAT keeps a soul very fit.

DO NOT TRY ANYTHING SAID IN THIS POST!!!
EVERYTHING IS STILL UNTESTED!!!

Just fired up my N810 which I purchased about a year ago but haven't been using at all. Now followed endsormeans idiot proof instructions of how to set it up, update and get repos from Gronmeyer. Well they were not idiot proof! This idiot needed more instructions - which were nicely spread around the forum when I always managed to ask questions under wrong threads. The most stupid once I pmd. Still some self esteem left to keep and protect. But at last got it up and running with asui, cssu and diablo turbo. And also squeeze running on ED!

But something is missing: netsurf 3.8. I like how ultimately fast it is on Jessie on N900. So why not install it on this device? First I just thought of trying to dpkg those packages to squeeze. Why not? They are packages, they are debian and they are used in ED environment. I think I asked about it from sulu and I think he mentioned that there is a slight difference with armel (N810) and armhf (N900). I don't understand the difference to be more than couple of letters in the end of an image name but at last accepted it.

Also it may affect that those packages are for Jessie (I think) and there is bigger difference with letters with jessie and squeeze than with armel and armhf (maybe not: there are too e letters on both and letter s. Should use aritmetic to be sure of the percentages). But it could help if I get Jessie on N810! Started to google debian jessie armel chroot image and how to build one. Found many new words, debootstrap and others, and read through many guides of how to make it happen, webos, kameleon, debos, multistrapping.

Almost thought of trying start from scratsh to build an armel jessie img but then found sulus instructions for jessie chroot on ed thread and gave up. So much to do and have to understand.

Also thought that what if I would just try to install jessie with usb and imginstaller cause I atleast know how to partition sdcard with geparted. Now I already have to choose where to boot so why not just make one partition, use imginstaller to install jessie on that and boot up from there. The imginstaller must be wiser than me and it always knows how to configure keyboard and screen and wifi and such. Haven't totally buried that idea.

But in the end it is probably easier just to download img from the net and try. Finally found one jessie armel chroot img from Samygo blog and downloaded it on my N810.

Started to hesitate though cause it is build for samsung tvs. Now I am not sure is it possible that there are too big differences in setup, thinking of screen and volume stuff which could do some damage to N810. Idea was that because it is a minimal build without desktop or gui I would just try to dpkg netsurf packages with it and hope some --fix-missing or aptitude -t would fill up what is missing and I could launch netsurf from chroot. Simple and easy!

Endsormeans gave me an advice (while answering my endless questions): read through the forums and do not hesitate. Hmm. I have the samygo samsungtv minimal jessie armel img already on my device and would just need to change in .chroot the name and try.

So hard to give up of a good idea. We'll see what I decide.

Yours,

Maemish

hahaha...
Like the disclaimer
hahaha...

and really Maemish...you are no idiot...
you just had a rough start to the process...
you were no idiot...
you were over thinking the process...in fact.
Using too much brain ...
when you should have been sitting with a bottle of half finished rum...unable to stand on your own without assistance ..and drooling profusely while repeatedly proclaiming loudly that there were pixies in your underwear molesting you...

THEN...attempting the walk through...

The walk through is the cobbled together best methods for the various disparate parts ...
for getting one's n8x0 to that penultimate state...explained In layman's terms so as to avoid confusion...

It is just that no one put it all together under a meta post (applicable context I believe) ...and explained it for someone who never heard of linux or maemo or the NIT line ....before. .

As far as how you have progressed since finally finishing the walk through ...
I am impressed.

In fact if you wish to work marvels and miracles on the n8x0...
then you are very much on the right path... I believe.

I just love the compatibility analysis; there's just 2 letter difference between almel and armhf, vs lots of letter differences between squeeze and jessie...

Yes sure that's valid measure of software compability, we count letters all da time to determine what we can install and where, right!

There are 3 if you spell it like that

True dat. Making it easier to install netsurf. My mind has formed through my education and my daily work to analyze stuff, try to find possibilities and what goes together in my field of expertize and what not, and to find the fastest solution to overcome porblems so that people can work. With this mind and with the knowledge I have on linux systems this is what I end up with: mind grabs a hold of everything it has in memory and tries to make them fit together to overcome problems. I know these things wont wok yet they are real possibilities to me untill proved wrong, cause as part of my education and personal studies I have had to doubt everything and test before believing and accepting as truth anything. Thats why not understanding something is for me not a "no" but a "possibly" and if someone here just says he doubts that some idea wont work it is not yet a fact parameter to be taken under calculations and consideration. If something can't be done and is explained why I accept it, but mere doubts I am not able to live according cause it is in contradiction the moral and truth .config of my mind which goes above everything and for which I have strict firewall rules for it not to be compromized.

huh....
interesting...
My mind has formed through much much time taken in brain cell replication...
Which I then proceeded to try to destroy at an alarming rate...
And now am hanging onto the essentials for BMF (base motor functions....autonomous stuff...breathing..pumping blood...etc....)

And for god's sake stop doing that...
you'll get a crick in your neck...
from being bent over all day ...
marvelling at the wonder and majesty...
of your ethical and moral belly button...

And you most certainly should get one thing clear.
Yes...if one tries there may always be a way to accomplish something.
But if one of the long standing NIT experts here say something is doubtful ...I would try listening to "the why" of said reasoning ...
rarely will you hear someone say "doubtful" concerning anything.
The only time you may hear the word "doubtful" ....is in relation to trying to achieve more than the specifications of the device or platform can actually manage.
You are more likely to hear "has been done", "could be done", "can't be done", "I or someone else already did it", "waste of time trying to do" ..
If you can conceive of an idea to implement...
and search the forum ...
My money says you will find at least one thread devoted to the idea you "just came up with" and it has been tackled in a dozen ways already....over the last ten years.....
Currently ....you and everyone else are riding the coat tails thus far of NIT giants long gone now who paved the way and accomplished most of what is enjoyed now....
You have a very long way to go before you can fill their booties.
So save the autobiographical on your motivations for when your feet can fit those booties.

My feet are size 45 so they fill most commonly in use boots. Never have thought of trying to prove to be something (not anymore and never here). I just share what I do and not thinking to be more that I am - same time being ok with what I am. The thread should actually be "To amuse myself" cause I laugh a lot to myself while trying to learn to be a linux hacker (which I honour so much) and same time being well aware that I'm not gonna be one cause I like too much of being everything and doing everything.

I've tried boots couple of times but they felt uncomfortable. My two pair of shoes I wear are safety boots and running shoes. In the 90's I wore indian moccasines through the whole year in finland. Now I'm more dull.
