completely agree...
and anyway...
the entire maemo line were for enthusiasts ....sooooo...that is hardly an impediment.
and hurdles, obstacles, barriers and the like are completely a given for us to overcome...

I laugh in the general direction of a few or multitudes of bugs...
Bugs can be overcome.
Bring the pinephone on...I say.

About Pine64:
I agree that they are more honest than Purism.
But let me tell you about my Pinebook (which I have since sold on):
It is built as cheaply as possible. That's why it's so cheap.
Seriously, the build quality, the keyboard, the screen... it works. That's about the best one can say about it.
No comparison to Nokia N9/N900.
Software-wise:
Pine64 do not make any sorts of promises or assurances there.
You buy the device, that's it.
Somebody else ported some Linux distro.
The enthusiasts never tell you about the disadvantages; who wants to admit defeat?
My biggest gripe was that there was NO stable GPU driver apart from the fallback driver. Video playback was between painful and impossible.
I'm not dissing Pine64, believe me.
I much prefer their business model to that of Purism.
But they're not producing miracles, there's a reason why and how their stuff is so cheap.
Also you will have to pay taxes/customs when purchasing directly from China. A lot. The pinebook + accessories cost me 110€, add to that shipping, paypal taxes, import taxes, I payed 213€ in the end. Not bad, huh?
Similar things will apply to the Pinephone.

I own three Pine64 SBC's (RockPro64, Pine64-LTS and a PineH64), a Pinebook Pro and have a PinePhone incoming. The SBC's all work quite well, running images/kernels that I've taken from various places (e.g. Armbian and Manjaro). It took a while before images showed up that supported all the hardware, but they got there.
The Pinebook Pro especially is a delight. It's very well built and sturdy, and the screen is very nice. The keyboard is OK and the trackpad is not so good. I'm running KDE Manjaro on it and graphics hardware acceleration, wifi, bluetooth, sound etc. are working. The battery life is extremely good, I can get +/- 10 hours out of it when surfing the web. For me that was a first on Linux. Perfect 'consumer' laptop for when you sit on the couch
Since the PinePhone is receiving equal (if not more) amounts of attention than the PineBook Pro, I think support for it will be very good as well. Maybe it will even replace the Nexus 5(X) as the go-to development test device for Linux-based mobile OS's.
We'll see. Whatever the case, I think Pine64 is achieving some great things for the open-source (hobby) community. They're very open in their communication and are not constantly over-promising, and they proof that things can be done for cheap and can still be good.
Let's see how the PinePhone turns out. I have high hopes

Now compare that to purism where AFAIK they still has not send a darn kit to the kde/ubuntu touch developer.
Pine also has got alot possitive attention from various Linux podcasters. Very much more "good" attention that purism who has mad alot of mistakes and made alot of people pissed in the community.
But do not forget pine have told many times in interviews this phone is for entusiast and it will have limitations and bugs.
Again compare that to purism where they over and over spread marketing ******** and do not deliver what promised.
When librem tells we soon shipping a real working FCC certified device. pine only send a limited sets of devkit phones and make sure to tell all it is beta also for much lower price.
