Carlos Guerreiro's blog post: http://www.notacloud.com/blog/?p=28

Hi,

An update to the OS 2007 / 770 hacker edition is now available for download at http://maemo.org/downloads/os2007_hacker_edition.php.

The main news is that sound is now working including media and system sounds.

Video works to some extent, though not the sample clip that comes with the image which is intended for the N800.

VOIP calls work too.

This time it’s a fiasco image. You can flash it in the same way as official releases.

This is described in Markku’s notes (http://maemo.org/maemowiki/Os2007On770) which are up-to-date with the latest developments.

There are still many glitches here and there, instability and performance problems, but with media capabilities this image is much more attractive.

Help is appreciated. Markku’s notes are open to contributions. Additions and corrections are welcome, including suggestions for addressing the remaining issues.

Problem reports specific to this release are welcome as well and should go to this Garage project (https://garage.maemo.org/projects/os2007on770).
Not to the Maemo bugzilla and definitely not to any Nokia support. There is no official support for this.

Finally, patches are most welcome, preferably attached to the Garage project's (https://garage.maemo.org/projects/os2007on770) tracker.

Enjoy,
Carlos
Might be time to start testing...

Well I've installed it on my 770 and so far it's looking very good!

I haven't tested much, but the browser (which obviously hasn't been updated) seems to be working fine, control panel seems OK, the home page is as it should be.

The first problem I've hit is that it's not possible to stream from AccuRadio HitKast - the error is "File format not supported" (have reported this in Garage).

No crashes so far!

EDIT: Hmmm, looks like MP3 codec won't be shipped in the OS 2007 on 770 firmware - according to the end of Markku's Wiki log:

Things that cannot be shipped to 770 users

These things in OS 2007 are not licensed for 770 and cannot be shipped to 770 users. Therefore they are taken out of the image:
  • New browser engine
  • Feature MP3 codec, mobile phones - this is a DSP codec - according to Makoto and Andrea it is however the same as in the 770...
  • Feature MPEG4 visual encoder - this is a DSP codec that has to be removed - it's packaged as gstreamer-hantro or something

I tried OS2007 on N770 too and I am seriously impressed.

It works and gave new life to my N770. So far everything I use (browser, media player, internet radio applet, osso-xterm) works fine. Even the browser (still old opera) has newer (IMO much better) interface and networking/browsing seems to be a bit faster to me. My webmail took long time from login to inbox in OS2006 (probably due to lot of redirects) but is as quick with OS2007 as on my N800 :-)

And what is also nice - you can dualboot between OS2006 and 2007 to have best of both worlds. Of course until OS2007 is better supported by applications because then OS2006 will be obsolete.

BTW if you have latest OS2006 and bootmenu installed you can just extract rootfs.jffs2 from FIASCO image and flash just this and do not lose bootmenu.

Yes OS2007 on N770 is unsupported but what does support mean exactly in this case? Are your favourite OS2006 bugs fixed? :-)

I agree fanoush - it works suprisingly well. In fact, so well it would be nice to think it might even be worthy of ongoing/official support (something pink just floated past my window...)

I have the latest 2006OS and boot from MMC (using Sebastian's Howto).
How does one get from there to dual-booting between 2006 and 2007 ?...
TIA

You will need to flash OS 2007 on the 770 then copy it to the MMC card. Having done that you then need to reflash with OS 2006. You should now be in a situation where you have OS 2006 on your internal flash and OS 2007 on your MMC card.

As fanoush says, flash only rootfs from each OS image to avoid losing your existing initfs.

If you do not want to lose OS2006 in flash you can backup it first via mkfs.jffs2 (when booted from mmc) as mentioned here http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...8&postcount=31 , then reflash with OS2007 rootfs, clone it to mmc (if you have some spare partition on mmc) and reflash again with previous OS2006 backup. Sadly extracting jffs2 image directly to mmc is not that easy.

Thanks to both for the pointers. First I'll need a bigger MMC though, 1 gig is not going to cut it for all that :-)

I tried the Hacker Edition and it look very good and it feels much faster than OS 2006.
The question is only what I can install on it. I was not able to install the enhanced osso-xterm because liaux0 was missing. This lib was not needed for the OS 2006. I tried offline since I have no wlan at home.
