@ginggs
Since latest mc 4.8.12 has really a lot important fixes and there are also a few patches about copy/move operations (a few will be addend in the 4.8.13)
Do you think you could prepare an updated package?

Yes, I haven't forgotten about mc. I plan to sync with the version in Debian and include joerg_rw's fix to use diffutils-gnu.

Maybe 4.8.13 is even better:

Yes, I'll upload after Debian Jessie freeze (early November).

I'm going to add a 'suggests' dependency on diffutils-gnu to allow mc's diff function to work. Are there any other GNU Utilities that we need?

Perhaps you could try that and report if any libraries (libssh2?) are missing.
I tried building with all of mc in Debian's options.

For spell check and general purpose mouse we need the following which are only in Extras-devel and might not have active maintainers:
http://maemo.org/packages/view/libaspell-dev/
http://maemo.org/packages/view/libgpm-dev/

For vfs-undelfs we need the following which is in the Fremantle SDK, but will need to get promoted to Extras:
http://maemo.org/packages/view/e2fslibs-dev/
Would this be of any use on a mobile platform?

For vfs-sftp (SFTP link) we need the following which are available in Extras:
http://maemo.org/packages/view/libgcrypt11/
http://maemo.org/packages/view/libgpg-error0/
and the following which is only in Extras-devel and might not have an active maintainer:
http://maemo.org/packages/view/libssh2-1-dev/

Unfortunately, the version of libshh2-1-dev in Extras-devel is only at version 0.18-1. I tried to build version 1.2.5-1, which is the earliest version that will work with vfs-sftp, but that seems to need at least version 2 of libtool, but there is only 1.5.26:
http://maemo.org/packages/view/libtool/

Update: I was able to build version 1.2.8-2 of libssh2-1 from Debian with only minor modifications and vfs-sftp works. I have requested to become a maintainer of libssh2-1, but may have to ask council if I receive no response.
Last upload of libssh2-1 to extras-devel was on 2011-02-17, and Slonopotamus's last activity on t.m.o. was on 2012-09-16.

Midnight Commander 4.8.13-0maemo1 is now available in extras-devel.

I'd appreciate some feedback before I promote it to extras-testing.

Changelog:
  • New upstream release.
  • Drop patches included upstream.
  • Fix FTBFS with glib <2.22.0 (upstream ticket #3333).
  • Merge changes from mc 3:4.8.13-3 in Debian:
    - d/patches/*
    - d/control: Depends, Recommends, Suggests and Provides
  • Update d/control: enable verbose build output.
  • Use wrappers to add /usr/bin/gnu to PATH in order to use
    diff from diffutils-gnu package - Thanks joerg_rw.

I'd guess not, because of different library versions, but it should build without modification on Harmattan. At least, previous versions did.
If there is an interest in Midnight Commander for N9 I can try uploading to OpenRepos.
