What the press is currently raving about is basically the scam version of fusion. They shoot pellets with a laser to compress them and initiate a fusion reaction. They get more energy out than the laser has. So yay!

But: You have to create the laser! And for that you currently need 1000x the energy the laser has. Looking not so good anymore. Then you also have to collect the energy release by the fusion reaction. They do not have any real solution for that yet.

The good news: There is very promising research done in Japan, Wendelstein 7-X in Germany and in the ITER project in France if they ever get past all the mistakes during building the reactor.

That's what I thought. We have a scam at our hands
Light Saber technology and effective fusion are/is still alien required.
