I remember when folks were stating that the N900 did not have an USB problem and that it was not affecting them.

So far I have been fortunate...
I bought a used pair of n900's ...and one was known to have a usb issue...I had forewarning and it didn't bother me to get one that had said issues..since it could be a parts device if necessary...
I have been careful about over use ...
It has been ok ..as long as kid gloves are used...
All my others..
I have been diligent in keeping them all in good condition and free from wear and tear...
I think I am not the norm considering the number of folks who have had problems...

In all those years I never had a problem with USB port but have 3 devices with failing modem lying around.
Okay, I was aware of that problem and filed down the hooks on all my USB cables (that get in touch with my n900s) and always pull the cable very very gently.
No chance of being careful about the modem

Yeah...the other of the pair ...the one with usb port wonky...was one with telephony / modem issues...
But I deliberately bought the pair for spares...or parts at worst...
Ottherwise...my other 3 n900s are perfectly fine...

Sorry to hear about your n900s peter
It must be all those armpit-fart-sound porn sites you visit that burned the modems out...

Me I have sanely been sticking to the ecuadorian-toe jam porn sites...

I know it's not a joke if you have to explain it, but - what's the joke?

weelll it's a kind-of-nerdy-pun really

@L29Ah was asking where to get a socket, and I gave a clue to get one by opening it. (opening a socket is a way to initiate a communications method in posix systems)

Actually my advice was inaccurate since calling stdlib open() would yield you a file descriptor and not a socket but the analogy is close enough. The real thing would be to call socket() but it is close enough to filedescriptor that everybody should get the joke

I have been thinking if I should worry about my N900's USB port. I have managed to break several USB connectors of chargers and power banks. For example, I tried to charge my N900 while sleeping outdoors in a sleeping bag. I had the phone and the power bank in my sleeping bag to keep them warm (it was like -15 degrees celcius). At the morning I found out that N900's battery was empty and power bank's USB connector was broken internally (it still works but it needs to be in a very exact position). Nothing happened to N900's USB port that time, but I guess I should be more careful with it.
