These were just some random boxes I picked at home and at least they return some related hits (on German google).

Actually, for fun I registered at http://www.informedindividual.org/ but it doesn't really give me any related functionality. I can only login to some Wordpress interface there. Didn't find any product database...

Where do I have to look?

Do you mean that you would like to scan a barcode while using another application that receives the code in the text field which has the focus, for instance in the web browser? That would be a killer feature, but I'm not sure how to do that. I'll see if we can learn something from the camkeyd application

By the way, I've posted some more info about the new release in another announcement thread:

Well if it's all about finally identifying yourself by means of that barcode on your forehead

That site is just a placeholder for what will be the information portal for the project in the future. I linked to it since it contains some more information about the project, but the server which runs the API is a completely different one. That is why you won't find any product database there at the moment.

Actually there is no interface to the database right now other than the plugin (and an admin interface). I'll do some work soon to make it more accessible both from the plugin and the web.

About the lookup database, I know that there is one at http://www.upcdatabase.com/, but it doesn't seem to give that much information but what you already can see on the package. I don't know how interesting it is to see this on your phone as well? I think it would be more interesting with plugins that connects the barcode information to nutrition facts, manufacturer, country etc, but I don't know of any current open databases with this information?

dragly, I would love to see the nutrition facts and whatnot, but I'm not sure the manufacturers even make this normally available. What would be better is perhaps what you are building, an open information database where people can submit this info, but the challenge would be to build it to fit all the HUGE range of types of products with UPCs. Personally though when I'm scanning a UPC its either to price compare (would start at Amazon or Google Products with plugins for Pricegrabber to come later [or see if InvisibleHand will become Fennec compatible]) or I'm scanning it to put it on a wishlist or as something to download later (Amazon videos/mp3 album).

I've just added a plugin which lets you look up any result on Google. It will be expanded with more search engines later.

It should show up in extras-devel within a couple of minutes. Just search for mbarcode and install mbarcode-plugin-webrequest. It will be included by default in the next version of mbarcode.

How do you suggest the user should select the search engine? Should it be a button saying "Look up with search engine" which opens a dialog where one could select Google, Amazon etc.?

@dragon_788: I forgot to mention, but a wishlist plugin is high up on my wishlist as well I hope someone else would like to develop it - otherwise I might give it a try.

Price comparisons would be nice. I haven't looked at the APIs for Amazon or Google, but if they are easy to use I might give them a try myself.

A community based UPC/EAN database will probably become a part of Informed Individual, but we'll try to gather some information from commercial databases first. In the meantime the plugin will hopefully be useful to get and give reviews about products.

In addition to preselected search engines, user could create custom engines with custom URL and Name. For example "%s" would be the searched string like in desktop Opera. E.g "http://www.google.com/search?q=%s"

Before implementing that I suggest that the default engine could be google.com instead of google.no

As a general mbarcode feedback, I would like to be able to copy the code in all cases. Maybe show it in a text box where system copy is possible.

Yep. I thought of that too. I'll try to implement that in the next version.

I was a bit quick with my copypasting there so I forgot to change the domain. I'll change it in the next version. Or maybe I'll use google.ch or something just for kicks

Good idea. I'll create a plugin which gives you that option.
