sulu ...the two gentlemen I referred to ...penguinbait and qole...both attempted to take their work from the n8x0 to the n900...
but they definitely had issues attempting... the particulars of their trials I do not know...
but little made it.

Well today's the day I'm retiring the N900 from daily work. The hardware and some of the software (especially the browser(s)) is just too out of date. From today I'm using a Droid 4 rooted and running Nougat, I'm planning to set up a full Linux desktop in a chroot on it. Hopefully the Neo900 project will work out.

As sad as it is I am thinking about this more and more
(especially as my modem starts to die).
Carrying two devices all the time is just not convenient.

I wish there were more development with the Cherry Trail Atom AMD64 devices, drivers are a mess and I am not sure there is one with complete sound, WiFI, BT, sensors, camera, GPS, and of course telephony and data drivers for Linux(forget 3D accel), not even with bin-blob drivers. It would require a distro effort on par with LineageOS or Ubuntu but with tweaked feeds for every individual device unlike how one size fits all for most desktop and laptop computers.
I feel like this is the only current pathway for us to have a real easy to hack device again.
Maybe this is a bad attitude because AMD64 is as much so we cna have desktop compatibility with crappy closed bin executables and libs as drivers.

The N900 browser has quite simple solution. Trying to run modern browser will never work - the device does not have enough RAM and fast CPU for it.

But the solution is quite simple - use fast server to render pages for you. Did this myself with VNC. I had chrome running on my debian server. It was very usable compared to the native N900 browsers.

We could have app for this. The basics could be really simple. Send url to server -> receive rendered png.

I always wanted to write it. But i am not coding in my free time and not using N900 anymore, alhought i miss it - it was greatest phone of all times, i love it (both software and HW).

Neat, but how will you pass links on the png'ified-page back to the server end?

Indeed. Why bother with writing an app? VNC should work fine. You can even use Xzibit to share only the web browser window instead of the whole desktop. What you see is what you get. (Sorry, I couldn't help myself!)

I honestly thought this was a joke for a moment.
