To be honest, what I'd do: 1, grab a DC-DC buck/boost module off Ebay(1-3A rated). Should be around $10, and you can set the output to 4.0V or so.
Then, pick up one of those external USB backup devices; the ones that are basically a Li-on battery, charging circuit, and USB input/output. Plug a standard wall-wart power supply into that to charge it, hook the output to your DC-DC module, and the output of that to the N900 battery pins.
This would allow you to have a battery backup(if the AC power fails for any reason), would be safe, and would provide enough power for the N900 without potentially under/overcharging the battery.

I just bought used N900 for 40 euros. It is my server now . I've put a timer for the charger so its not always charging the battery.
