A short explanation
"3D Touch
Let's get to the good stuff: 3D Touch. It exists, it's here, and it works. Everything we reported on back in 2014 was spot on. There are Live Tiles that 'explode', and you can interact with the phone merely by hovering your hand over it.
3D Touch works with various sensors in the display and even on the sides of the McLaren. As your finger approaches the screen all the Tiles begin to move in a wave-like fashion as visual feedback. Hovering above the Internet Explorer and Phone reveal the 'exploding' Live Tile MixView feature. The concept here was to give developers freedom to show more information on the Live Tile. Instead of just two sides, you could have up to eight smaller tiles. When you hover, the Tile explodes and moves to the center of the display where you can act on the smaller tiles. It is a little awkward, but it works."

yes...
I get the idea...
I see the vids...
I get it...
But it is hardly 3D...
The device may have sensors to note the movement and proximity of objects near to the device and show a representation of that feedback ...
But it is a fake - out ...it is a dupe...
It is an - almost -there - but -not - quite...
It is a trick at this point...
How much further this novelty tech (at this point) goes in the future..
is the test of this tech ..right now..
I can say now in all certainty...
It is FAR easier to manipulate 3D in a VR than to manipulate by "guessing" proximity unseen ...and witnessing the results of it only by its represented feedback.

...and you wonder why it flopped.
The company must have thought they were working on the Next Big Thing™, spending years and megabucks on it. Then the users took one look and said, "meh".
They could have asked me and save themselves a lot of time and money. Or ask Great Steve for a marketing spin that would make the customers swoon. Either one would do.

Now....
If some smart SOB...utilizes VR gear WITH this 3D proximity rendering...
then you can manipulate with it ...with relative ease.
(well...at least with less hassle for the non-artist...who doesn't get dimensional work)

A few Galaxy Notes ago, I noticed tiles near the nib of the pen, without touching, were sensitive to the proximity of the pen. Is this something similar?

This technology has not been released, although it had a lot of potential on how to interact with our phones.

This one has a slightly older firmware that supports the non-touch operation of the device from a distance, but in order to unlock all features it needs to update to a newer firmware.
