Sorry if this might constitute a double post, as I've already described the problem in the games forum, but I think this calamity goes beyond the scope of the games and into system stuff.

I seem to have damaged the libfreetype6 library that is claimed to be used by nearly every program there is on my Nokia 770 during an unsuccessful installation of Wesnoth, as I ran out space.

The following portion of the log shows what was done to the lib

Code:
Installing wesnoth 1.2.6-1
/bin/sh: /usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure: not found
(Reading database ... 11983 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace libfreetype6 2.1.10-1osso1 (using
.../libfreetype6_2.2.1-1osso3_armel.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement libfreetype6 ...
Selecting previously deselected package wesnoth.
Unpacking wesnoth (from .../wesnoth_1.2.6-1_armel.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/wesnoth_1.2.6-1_armel.deb (--unpack):
 failed in buffer_write(fd) (8, ret=-1): backend dpkg-deb during
`./usr/share/wesnoth/images/attacks/fireball.png': No space left on
device
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/wesnoth_1.2.6-1_armel.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Having cleared up enough memory, I attempted a scond installation, but found this problem:

Code:
Installing wesnoth 1.2.6-1
apt-worker: not configuring unrelated package libfreetype6
/bin/sh: /usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure: not found
(Reading database ... 11876 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking wesnoth (from .../wesnoth_1.2.6-1_armel.deb) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of wesnoth:
 wesnoth depends on libfreetype6 (>= 2.2.1); however:
Package libfreetype6 is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing wesnoth (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
 wesnoth
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
I checked my list of installed apps (in red-pill mode) and discovered that the libfreetype6 is listed as broken. I haven't found any problems while running the programs that use this library, so I assume it's not broken completely. From the installation code I assume that it just didn't get a chance to get properly configured. Then again, I know next to nothing about linux. I wonder if there is a way to reinstall/reconfigue this library without flashing the device.

So I take it from the lack of responce that it's impossible. Guess I'll have to reflash after all.

Did reflashing fix the problem for you? I seem to be having the same problem.
