Connect the N900 to the network, that's how it's designed to be used. wi-fi or 3.5G or 3G or 2.5G or 2G (GPRS), all of this works.

Then use the application manager to install applications, that's how it should be done. Messing around with individual .debs is not how new users should start installing stuff, and it's hardly ever needed even for developers.
