OS2008 seems to support system tray icons, where I never noticed them in 2007. This is great. My only problem is that the system tray icon's background for third party applications, like Pidgin, is white and does not blend well with the rest of the 2008 UI; i.e. it does not look like the screen shot on Maemo:

On my device, the background is white and sticks out from the others. Am I missing something?

you guys probably have an older version of Pidgin than what was used in the screenshot.
Look at the last post from nix about the latest release of Pidgin. I think nix says that there is a back color issue that will be fixed "soon"
