hahaha...

even without Daves help...
it looks grim.
I don't think we will get our collective act together , stop what we do to this place, the other species here, and one another ....to save ourselves.
Too many want too much, or want to make sure they retain power, or wish for power, or are just apathetic .

Obviously the smartest way would be changing the humanity and how we live but that is Sci-fi. Impossible. Can’t happen. It’s more likely that we trying some super unreal solution like some space glasses reflecting parts of the beams.

Just check the crazyness @france. Want to increase tax for gasoline with some tiny amount.

What’s needed? Tax should be increased 99% percent today worldwide.

And it’s mandatory. We need an enforcer!

the people think it is bad now?
just wait...
the cost of food due to climate issues is set to increase and just keep going up....
as it is the mark up on food is 300%...
but it will get far far worse...
who was it now?
David Attenborough ...
https://grist.org/article/david-atte...ands-of-years/

spelled it out in brief.

I think Dave you can start your countdown....
It will be bad enough for us who are alive now...
and God forbid we reach zero day in our lifetime.

I’m with you.
Might be becouse of that Russia building a more advance army, US keep building heavy bombs, EU looking For an army. China keep buying stuff around the world. The biggest and baddest will survive longest looking for control of food and water.

I will set up my own shop at mount Dave and trying to live there with a small community as peaceful as possible until the shitshow eventually hits my fan.
Done with my water system, collecting water and use it with solar devices to automatically handing water supply for food. Next I will try to see and do some calculation how much energy I can create and possibly store.

So how is this affecting you guys, water restrictions? Car restrictions? Or worse? Or not at all so far?

well...
that is smart Dave.
water collection and purification is pretty darn critical.
having one's own garden to produce food is up there too..
all one needs to feed a family of 4 or 5...is a 1/4 of an acre garden, and that will grow a years worth of produce.
Cold storage for fall vegetables and fruit is a good idea ...
If a cold cellar is dug under the ground level...root vegetables stored in such a room last longer (odd isn't it?) than in a refrigerated storage, and is cheaper on electricity.
Canning is a great hobby, and well worth taking up.
When summer vegetables are harvested, canning the bulk of them so you can have virtually fresh veggies and fruit in the winter is cheap and tasty,
I grew up learning all this on the farm, and my mom and grandma were always canning when harvest time came...

The stories my mom and grandma told of how hard it was for people during the depression, and after the wars, how they felt lucky, that even though they didn't have a lot, the farm and all the produce they brought in, paid the bills and kept everybody fed, and they helped their neighbours.
I think there will be more of that happening, soon.

I think it only a matter of time the whole idea of a "separate isolated bubble life" will be popped and ending...
people who can help one another like communities used to do will be on the rise again as times get tougher.
Those with practical skills that can help others are also good in trade.

and yes, a power supply is handy, solar in a pinch for basic charging and lighting is fine, but unless one lives in a sun-lit high exposure part of the planet, it is not to be solely relied on.
Most northern climes need wind power and / or other combinations to produce enough power for daily life needs , at a minimal output.
Best is having a consistently running body of water nearby, put a pelton wheel on it, get the batteries one needs and an electrician in to wire it to ones house, and that has always been the cheapest, most effective way of producing power that can provide enough, with little breakdown problems as well.

It is never a bad thing to be able to be prepared for emergencies.
Whether it is power outages from storms that may last only hours, days or weeks, to the collapse of civil society .. it doesn't hurt to have a preparedness plan and work at it...good hobby unto itself.
My point of view...I think you are being prudent Dave.

concerning the "powers that be"...and moves they will make trying to grab what they can...
Thing is...it is like 2 sides of a coin ..
1 side is a stable economy providing resources and stable currencies...to afford the other side of the coin, the military.
you need roads for the military. you need stable running infrastructures, of all kinds as well.
The global economy falls apart for whatever reason.
The military of the planet won't last much longer afterward.
Gotta pay troops, gotta feed troops, gotta clothe troops.
Then there is the equipment, gotta make sure replacement parts can be made for literally everything.
Hell, height of the cold war, the life expectancy from just running the state of the art tanks through terrain was 3 days in war time. I think the running lifespan before breakdowns start was a few weeks , months...
So the power grab by these powerful countries with their delicate and highly technical equipment will be short lived.
They won't have much time.
So I wouldn't be too worried on that front.
I would be worried AFTER the "Powers that Be" fall apart, and the world has little in the way of law and order.
For a few weeks , even perhaps months, all should be somewhat ok.
But then the city people who don't really "produce" anything ...are going to start getting hungry as the food starts drying up.
I am sure before that begins to happen, many cities may try to take over many farms in out lying areas to produce food for them, but ...a few farms are not going to produce food for millions in a single city.
It will get grim, fast, if civil society collapses.
It will be the first few years that will be toughest.
With roaming people who have no skills a community would need... taking what they can...I am sure....
Not too pleased with the prospect.
It will be a nightmare ...
It shouldn't be too bad here for me...on Gabriola, but some from the city a few miles away, will try to take boats I am sure, to come across and grab what they can...
It would be a weird time here..

This being a long post, I will answer your question to me in the next I write...

How are things here?
well environmentally ...we have lost about 60 percent of our wildlife in the past 40 years due to climate and human impact.
many northern species are currently having a hard time of it with climate change
a report just released found 300- 500 toxins in polar bear blood
Hell ...in the arctic all the world's contaminants come home to roost.
PCBs, lead, arsenic, you name it.
and just climbs up the food chain to the inhabitants...
it is a slow time bomb for them.
try telling a planet to stop....eh?

hm....climate change has been messing with our weather severely here.
the seasons don't move quite right anymore, are too mild or severe depending....so I have watched over the years.

food prices are expected to go up for Canadians by 4-6% next year due to climate and economic factors.
Even though Canada signed on with the new NAFTA trade agreement, the USA has not stopped its tariffs on us, so it hasn't helped either Americans or Canadians ...and it simply hurts both in Trumps stupid idea of Tariffs solving problems...
Likewise due to the fact the USA is flooding the market with oil, the price has bottomed out and now there is a serious need to get our own oil to the the coast to sell overseas, so the imperative for a pipeline is there.
Economically it is hurting Canada,
Then of course GM is restructuring for electric ...and is shutting plants in USA and Canada and so losing many jobs, which also doesn't help economically.

That being said.
Personally, I have a nice acreage excellent for my garden, a running downhill stream and large pond at the bottom, fit for fish , and the stream for a pelton wheel for electricity, which I hope to have finally finished in the next couple of years.
Gabriola Island is great, it has always been a diverse and self contained community.
We have farms putting out local produce, and meats.
We have all kinds of skilled crafters, weavers, and artisans.
Actually there was talk a decade or so ago, that my island tried to get a community hydro electric project so we were power self sufficient ...but the provincial electric governance wouldn't allow it at that time.
who knows in a few years they may ...

Many folks here ..never leave the island....have no desire to...and I don't blame them at all.

For myself, I am skilled enough with the practical work I do in antler that tools and hasps and clasps and all sorts of gee gaws would be needed if we really did ever end up being a self contained society here...
So ..as long as I have enough time to get everything set up properly...
Then I should be fine...

Given the increased sea levels the island will be smaller. But even if it’s big enough for that you will still face trouble. The bad thing is that your island will be invaded by everyone with a boat as soon as that place will be superior to the city.

The east side of the island has beaches and is lower towards sea level ..and a hundred people tops would be dislocated due to rise of sea level ...
But the rest of the island is 300 to 500 feet above.
Once off the ferry it is a climb for everyone up the roads...
The island is pretty much vertical and plateaus ...
We wouldn't lose much of the island from sea level rise...

Me...my place is about 300 feet above sea level..
I am in no threat.
Likewise most of the population here...
Also with a population of 4000+/- ...I would imagine lookout posts and shifts of lookouts would be posted to available approaches if the crap hit the fan that seriously.

Also...The harbours at Nanaimo and up and down the coast of Van Isle would empty rather quick with the beginning collapse of society...
all the boat owners would be running to secure their boats, or get away ..or sail them to secure out of the way locations...
First thing that would happen is many would try to flee the islands ...thinking it their only chance just to get back to the mainland...
After the initial dust settles..I think there wouldn't be a boat at dock anywhere around...

The bigger threat would be from the mainland later on...
With boats coming to look to take food and provisions...
Yet again though...
By the time that kind of planned venture was organized I would expect that few would be around to properly sail the vessels, and those that were proper mariners would be long gone...
and I would guess without a civil society , Marine AIS and satellite tracking and all those easy easy methods of avoiding grounding, going up on rocks and other hazards locally, won't be available...
The currents are swift and rough around Gabriola...
and even with all kinds of tracking equipment...I see so many ships sink, grounded, capsized, etc ...just in the harbour and around Gabriola ...as it is ...every year...
So only the foolish and desperate would try... post civil society collapse.

Just read from the weather network...
2019 could be the hottest year in human history...
not good.

I have been finding it harder and harder to enjoy End of the World films ...the last while...
Most seem like alternative options that could be "chosen" or could have happened..."Could Have Beens" ...so to speak...
And with how our species choices are narrowing our options from choosing our own ending...speculating about it ...to no choice...
I am finding it harder to watch such films..
Only one I have watched the last while now...I re-watched today..

Not sure if you would like the film or not Dave...
Since it is ...uniquely more ...hm.
It is different , and hard to pin down so I may leave it for you to decide ...
Since it makes one focus personally and on how one relates to others...
It is a Sci Fi ...
yet it isn't.
It is an End of the World Apocalyptic....
though only one scene shows it briefly and from a distance.
AI or SI is also a primary factor and in it...
though in the best of ways possible.
It won a number of awards ...and I think is a well done and moving film.
A "thinking" film that makes one reflect.
It is no Michael Bay film.

"Love" (2011 film)

Anybody own any Microsoft stock? I think around 2014 Microsoft bought out parts of Nokia. Doubt that has anything to do with this trend though...
