To access GNU/Linux desktop: use VNC server on GNU/Linux and VNC Viewer on N800

To access MS Windows desktop: Enable remote access in Windows and use rDesktop on N800

You can't play _all_ the media formats on your Windows desktop through a a Nokia N800. Give it a try and you will know the boundaries and limitations.

I've found that rdesktop works fantastic on the n800 for accessing windows machines (xp pro, vista, or windows server).

Also VNC is available, but I havn't used it yet.

VNC works very well for Windows machines, but you can't transfer files using it. You can only, remotely, operate the Windows machine. Even the clipboard can't be used. (or was that vnc'ing into the N800 from a Windows machine?)

Using TightVNC viewer on your XP machine and x11vnc server on the n800 you can transfer files in both directions but only from the XP machine.
