For those who have been looking for a video converter for the Nokia 770,
itT member Urho Konttori has been busy improving his very own GPL utility
called Media Converter. Media Converter lets you convert a long list of
different video formats to the correct video size and format that the
Nokia 770 supports. Below is a list of video formats it supports:

* MPEG-1 (VCD) and MPEG-2 (SVCD/DVD/DVB) video
* MPEG-4
* MJPEG, AVID, VCR2 and ASV2
* DivX
* 3ivx
* Windows Media Video 7/8 (WMV1/2)
* Windows Media Video 9 (WMV3) (using x86 DLL)
* RealVideo 1.0, 2.0 (G2)
* RealVideo 3.0 (RP8), 4.0 (RP9) (using Real libraries)
* Sorenson v1/v3 (SVQ1/SVQ3), Cinepak, RPZA and other QuickTime codecs

New version *might* improve matters. I haven't tested it on any movie trailers with movie aspect ratio, but it does use mencoders autoaspect that either a) does the trick or b) makes the movie unplayable on 770. Hmm... Might make sense to test...

Yeah, I got a bit of the aspect issues, but otherwise the media converter is very useful. I'm also surprised at how long my battery lasted playing video. I watched 2 hours of video on a flight yesterday with very minimal battery decline.

Hey Sir Urho Konttori, awsome converter. I really like it...
Though I wonder if you might do me a favor? I'd like to play with different things myself, could you give me the mencoder command you use... I can't seem to figure out which codec works. .. #&!!???
Thanks in advance

As I use this converter a lot (btw love your converter), the sound is off a bit in all my movies (I use avi files). However, let's all be thankful now that atleast we can somewhat watch movies on our 770!

i get the audio/video synch off when i try and convert vob files with media converter. to fix that, i have to convert my dvd vob files with dvdfab (rip the encryptions off), then convert the vob files to avi with simpledvd, and last convert the avi files with media converter. its a long processs but the audio/video is in synch and the video is awesome

all the programs i use is freeware.

Sure thing. This is from the 0.96 release (which is the most current one):
mencoder.exe "inputfilename" -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=64 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:dark_mask=0.2:autoaspect:keyint=250:v bitrate=384:trell=yes:v4mv=yes:vpass=1 -vf scale=352:208 -idx -ffourcc DIVX -ofps 15.0 -endpos 00:00:30 -o outputfilename
