Is there a way to put the N900 into a mode where the cellular stuff is off but wifi can still be used?

That would be the easiest.

But it may cut off some channels from WiFi (13?)
Else there is a wonderful applet: AdvancedSwitcher

Or you may search my 'fix' for the long starting time with N900 having the 'all telephony disabled' modem death...
This will cut off modem.

AdvancedSwitcher works great. Now I can use in-flight wifi while keeping cellular off as required by the airline.

Opera and QmLBrowser can get TLS1.2. As well as Netsurf 3.9.
