Hello, after some recent whatsapp update I can't see any of my contacts. I tried fiddling with the "show all contacts" setting in the app with no luck.
This happened after freshly resetting Sailfish and installing the latest version of the app, both from the official website and from the jolla store. I am now on 2.16.258.

The issue is essentially explained in this question, with the sole difference that I'm on Jolla 1.

Anyone with the same issue? Telegram can see the contacts just fine.

Ah, I despise whatsapp, once more. Sad most of my contacts use it.

Thanks!

You and me both... for the dispising aspect, such a shame we were forced to stop usng whasup.

Have ticked the option to allow android apps to access your contacts under android support?
I use 2.16.247 and my contacts appear just fine... I suggest you use another release of the app, these issues are sometimes version related

I do face this issue now and then after updating sailfish and/or whatsapp. I think it has something to do with me having android data and /home/nemo mounted to sd card. (correcting the mount --bind to mount --rbind mostly fixes the issue)
What helped back on sailfish ver.1.x.x was:
-backup Whatsapp data only (using titanium backup)
-remove whatsapp
-restart aliendalvik
-start Exdialer and let it load all contacts
-restart aliendalvik
-reinstall whatsapp but dont start it
-restore Whatsapp data with Titanium backup (data only)
-start WhatsApp and check if contacts load again

Thanks to both of you. The contact access is allowed. And exdialer does not see the contacts as well.
Something must have happened with my restored backup messing up everything
I'll try the titanium backup trick but so far I can't seem to find a way to root the Android side. Also, I'd rather not do it unless necessary!

Just install Aliendalvik Superuser from Warehouse.
Inside Superuser app go to preferences - Multi-User Mode and set it to -User-controlled-. Also set 'Automatic Response' to -allow- and you are set.
Remove it afterwards if you want.

It really is time for the masses to wake up!

Use https://telegram.org/ or https://whispersystems.org/ instead of NSA clients such as Whatsup, facebook, skype or gtalk!

Hopefully the masses wakeup after seeing snowden film.....

For a comprehensive reading on that matter, I like this article:

As much as I agree with you (I use telegram, send email pgp encrypted, host most of my services and files encrypted on a VPS, etc.) we both have to deal with the reality: most of the people out there use Whatsapp. The same happened at the time of Skype: we linux users insisted on pushing for a move to standard protocols, like we kinda always do, but simplicity and convenience always appeals the masses more than complicated but open and "right" technologies.
Thanks for the link.

@jordi Thank you too for the read, It is mind opening.

@J4zz I went through your steps, no luck. Exdialer can't see the contacts.
Keep in mind that I had no local contacts, I only imported them from my Google accounts where I still store them (I need to move them to my own carddav server soon). I read somewhere that Sailfish cannot expose the "cloud" contacts to the Android layer for some legal/technical reasons. Can't remember where.
This does not really explain why everything worked before the reset, and why Telegram can access them though.
I'll keep you posted.

I fully agree one of the keys is that apps must be easy to use that's why XMPP failed totally all client is crap and boring. But telegram is easy to install and use. I have not yet tested signal but it also seems easy to use. Both apps also exists in Android/Apple/SFOS/Desktop so it should be easy for normal users. But is also marketing and tell why they should use telegram/signal instead.

I personally will recommend this to my parents as soon as I am sure what is best. signal vs telegram in case of security.
