I have seen this depending on how dark it was in the room. I think this results from using several leds rather than some of the more normal methods used in LCD monitors. This would allow them to save on battery power (and size).

Yeah confirm that as well. I had a Palm Lifedrive for about a week and it had this as well except alot worse.. looked like ripples and extended about 15mm away from the edge. One of the reasons I returned it.
And, I can see 6 brighter spots on the right side....
Does this happen to anyone else?
