Assuming devs for Mplayer would have had the time to focus on a release with the N900 launch, of course.

I installed Mplayer and it has played almost everything I have tried. I am now up to 95% and close to the same sweet level as the Archos 5

At best, the default player (even with the codecs added) plays 70% and some with ghosting, partial green screens and dropped frames. Not seeing these issues with Mplayer. Just great results

I hope that Mplayer gets released soon and adds:

1. UI
2. On screen controls
3. Fix- fast forward needed to make some avi and MP4 files to play.
4. Read video headers (some files that are numbered have the title in the header). Example is file viewer does not, but the media player on the N900 does read them.

MINOR quibbles for a GREAT playing media player that is not even released yet

Mplayer ROCKS!

Erm.... i don't quite understand.
Your thread title asks why mplayer is not there by default (implying it should), then you list reasons why it's incomplete (lack of ui and such)
Multiple personality? Senility? Indecision? (don't really take this seriously, didn't mean to offend)

Did you already compare power usage between MPlayer and the default media player? ;-)
In addition, MPlayer is kind of standalone app, while the inbuilt player fits nicely with the rest of the media framework stack (Gstreamer, MAFW).
Plus all the other reasons you listed yourself.

The gstreamer backend is the only interface provided to the onboard decoding hardware for h264, xvid etc....

Mplayer does not use gstreamer for decode, so it will be slower, more power hungry etc.

Yup. mplayer fileyouwanttoplay with whatever parameters you want.

MPlayer and VLC are pretty powerful with their parameters if you know how to use them. Their GUIs usually hide most of it if I remember correctly.

Do not mention extras-devel unless you need to mplayer is in extras-testing. But before you install it; it's slow, it's not optified, there's no gui
