Can anyone confirm that the appearance of GMail and a few other Google pages are different in microb vs IE, Firefox, or Chrome?

The biggest difference is the gmail layout. The "big brother" browsers have different icons and feature paths vs microb. For example, moving email to other folders use different methods.

On the other hand, the new iGoogle "updates and friends" sidebar links appear in microb, but not Chrome.

Why does this happen on the same google account when surfing on different browsers and can they be made to be consistent?

Check the bottom of the screen for the selection of Standard versus Basic Gmail view. If Google doesn't recognize the browser type, it will default the view to the older Basic funtionality. AFAIK only Tear can work with the modern Standard view. MicroB cannot. HTH
