We could go for the slide idea, but in that case, we have to choose a smaller keyboard, something like this:

I don't have this keyboard, so i don't know it's exact dimensions, but it seems small enough to be centered on the phone and leave room for camera and fingerprint.

is the main plan, but if fast charging is used i don't know if that will work, but BT keyboard used little power so will be based on stock BT-HID setup, custom made circuit board with the traces made like the N900, just need to find the small metal domes that goes between circuit board and tape

Rest of keyboard will be printed, keys on resin printer if necessary

I have one....works great, cheap too. length and thickness are n900 -esque....actually it is thinner...width is just a wee bit more...battery life and connectivity are good.

with 10,000mAh battery usage of keyboard is not going to be a issue, will include an on off switch if there is room, will also be directly connected to the battery as it is just under it, just need to find a donor BT keyboard with Li-Po/ion battery as the one i have is 2x AAA and don't know if it will work with 3.5V+ or BT-HID board

I would suggest a wireless keyboard so functionality
begins at boot instead of waiting for post-boot OS support.

...Recognizing this may be too difficult to achieve in practicality...

also starting with wireless, USB should work but this project is about having a "N900" as easy as possible

USB will be experimented with along the way, would like OTG also and there is room in the cover for a USB-A or/and USB-C port, would be nice just to plug in a USB-Stick directly or other things

Just got a slide keyboard for my iPhone 4S. This have 4 rows of keys and I^m writing with it right now. Terrible experience so far. This keyboard is really thin which doesn*t seem as a plus. And noticed that there should be enough empty space left between the upper row and the phones body. Noticing that it is difficult to press the buttons cause the finger tip hit the phone every time. This was the thing I wanted to share.

that is also why i will make some versions (know from xp ) to find the best feel, like the N900 with the mugen cover was better to type on, but not considering making such a thick phone, unless you need 20,000mAh
