Yikes! I went to the UPS website and started noodling around with some options there, starting with a 6 inch x 6 inch x 3 inch, 1 pound box to Germany or the UK. So far, the cheapest options I've been getting start at $85.

I do not remember (may have to check) but it could have been U.S. postal service or

Yeah, that one is much better. I've just checked their website, and their slowest shipping option does provide the ability to send relatively small, lightweight packages to Germany at around the $25 level.

Sounds more reasonable to me
And yes it was USPS.

But have to correct me regarding batteries. What I could fetch from old conversation is that it must be declared (but should not raise costs)...

It seems to me absolutely crazy that such a lovely treasure trove sells for mere peanuts but the shipping costs bang thru the roof

Yeah, at a price of less than $4 per N800, this certainly looks like a steal. Well, I've got a bid in now, we'll have to see how high it goes...

Well, there were obviously several people with their eyes on this trove. I stayed in the bidding up to about the $60 range, but in the last few seconds the winning bid ran up to $142.50. So some folks do see the value in the N800!
