Here is an example http://www.skinbase.org/rate.php?skins=23164.

although it is not exactly 800x480, i believe it is large enough to be stretched to fit the screen. Now i wonder if it will appear animated or static.

If non-OS firmware like nokia s40 or generic SE phones are able to support animated gif files as animated wallpaper natively, why not OS?

Why the ridicule? It is a simple yes or no question...does it support animated gif's for backgrounds or not?

Well... this is X windows, right? so it seems like you might be able to use some of the classic x-root-window animation apps, like xsnow or xdesktopwaves, http://xdesktopwaves.sourceforge.net/

I used to use an old X program called "xanim" to do this kind of stuff with x-root-window settings. I think it's still around. Maybe it can be compiled and configured to run when X starts on the N900.
