They are snake oil, just like the things that supposedly shield you from electromagnetic radiation (if you want to get me started on that, PM me).

I have a perpetual motion delorean that doesn't need fuel. I'm a bit sort of money and will sell it for a few thousands if you are interested :-P

FWIW, I made an antennae mod for my Droid. It helped significantly for Verizon's CDMA...I would think that it could help with another carrier's 2G network:

There are a couple of guys in some DIY antennas site who put a dipole antenna coupled through near field, that is, without electrical connection, on a usb wifi and managed to get some gain.
