xbmcremote and xbmc-potato aren't quite "xbmc" on device per se...
is there something I'm missing in the repos?
xbmc properly working and available in the repos?
and if so which repos are they please...
I'd like to try this out...

xbmc works...yes...as has been demonstrated in a few youtube vids...
it just works....just..
but...the video is too much for the n900 under maemo.
streaming those frame rates ...those resolutions ...was never meant for the n900...
as can be seen...in said youtube videos...
Hell just go to xbmc on your pc and look at the res. and streaming qualities of those frame rates straight from their sources...
It's just too much ..

unless someone comes up with an on-the-fly converter...

XBMC (working fully)
ON
THE
N900
WILL
NEVER
HAPPEN

perhaps under an alt os...easy deb or debian900 or ..another os..
it may possibly have better results now...
But I know of no xbmc functioning fully on the n900 at this point in time...

now ....
running xbmc on a pc and streaming from the pc using knots or a vnc..to your n900...
.wellll...that is more likely to work than running xbmc fully on the n900...

Ahhh, you mean the XBMC server? That will never happen.

Kodi is working very nicely on my Pandora and is working fine on Raspberry Pi as well. Doesn't the N900 have similar specs?

the new xbmc [kodi] also works on my old boxee box...
but it doesn't mean the new kodi is certainly going to work on the n900...
xbmc works for photos, music on file etc... and it isn't about the service not working...
it's about the frame rates and resolutions file types and what kind of container it's in...then there is the same issue with the video's audio....etc...
of whatever is being streamed "to" the n900...
if someone came up with a magical on-the-fly video [and audio for that matter] converter that took incoming xbmc streams ...regardless what the streamed content's properties were...and converted them into what the n900 can handle...and then played that...well...xbmc will work.
otherwise I wish whoever [ is going to try to make the n900 handle that incoming load ] the best of luck.

If however ...there are services on xbmc/kodi which have low enough requirements ...it may play natively on the n900...
low enough compatible streaming speed...
low enough compatible frame rates...
same for res. and compatible audio...
a lot to hope for ...
perhaps they exist on xbmc...highly doubtful though...perhaps you may stumble and find some stream or two somewhere on xbmc/kodi which would work...needle in a haystack though...

hmmm...
actually...
actually...actually...actually...
anyone can have their own service up on xbmc/kodi...
their own station of channels so-to-speak...
If someone had the interest and spine to stick at it...

http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on_development
http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on_repositories
http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Create_...ry_for_add-ons
I imagine it would be very possible to put up content on said custom stations that were optimal for the nxx0...not just the n900...
For example...
I have an external storage full of film which is optified specifically for the nxx0 and I simply delete off my n8x0's and n900's stuff I'm tired of watching and load up more from my storage...or if I'm super lazy...just watch it via vnc off one of my computer's storage...
but I more than oft prefer to have stuff "on" device ...for when I'm not within wifi range ...
A good repository of film pre-optified for the nxx0's and thrown onto an xbmc/kodi station with very specifically limited streaming speeds perfect for the nxx0's would work...
In theory that is...
I haven't tried it...but it should work...
for myself on my devices I use my bulletproof nxx0 mediacoder preset to convert all my film...always works like a dandy...
You could give it a shot and see...
hehe...
whoever does try this...and it succeeds ...may find themselves ultimately providing a streaming service for us all here...

but yeah...
if any are hoping that a wave of a magic wand and "Poof!" we all can simply enjoy the vast multitude of streaming film from xbmc/kodi without any sweat on the brow of effort...
well...
there is no quick fix...

best I can suggest is setting up a repository and filling it up with nxx0 compatible film...
a little effort ...
for potentially a great gain...

IMHO, Kodi, fka XBMC, really isn't a very good media server anyway. So a build of Kodi without the UPnP server is no big loss. "Media Sharing" on the N9 makes a better media server. I'm sure somewhere there's someone with a "Kodi as server" setup that proves me wrong, but for my purposes having a MythTV backend acting as a server and Kodi in the living room as a "wife proof" front end is a better solution.

Kodi is much better suited to the role of media consumer, and that's how I'd imagine using it on my N900, too. OTOH, much of its functionality in that role can be replicated with other Maemo applications. E.g., N900 Media Player is really nice as a combination UPnP renderer/controller, and there are a number of acceptable media clients for various online services.

But who am I kidding, anyway? The "normals" will just get one of many low-cost set top over-the-top boxes for paid spyware, ad-ridden services and call it good.

upnp?
Well for immediate personal file sharing ...
(NOT getting all the streaming video services available...
which is just not going to happen...best as I said in that case is...someone transcodes a whack of film into nxx0 compat formats and creates a kodi repo ...then all that film could be streamed ..but only that film.]
upnp?
well different ball of wax.

http://kodi.wiki/view/UPnP/Client
http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Share_libraries_using_UPnP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6q0wL1k9UA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYX-8FrB1DM

Soooo...the same issue still would probably apply...
I'm sure you'd still need to transcode your film into nxx0 manageable formats..
easy-peasy ...
just download mediacoder
add and use the n8x0 preset [works for n900 too]
here
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...39&postcount=1
pretty much one-click-running from there.
go to town making individual copies or batches..
makes modestly low file sized transcoded copies of your fav film

then just upnp
should work then with kodi..
theoretically ...
I have personally not tried this...but it should work.
upnp setup from latest kodi build to the older xbmc build done on the n900 [specifically speaking of what build was accomplished by that member of ours who posted the youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAH8GqYmeGs a few posts back in 2010-2011 in this thread...] should be doable .

Hm.
Actually ..
cutting the middle out of the process may be possible.
If that old n900 xbmc build can cope with PleXBMC...
that is...
at least for the new kodi on pc to recog. the old n900 build ...
then utilizing PleXBMC on the Kodi pc build...
tweaking the settings would mean allowing for immediate on-the-fly transcoding of original film to nxx0 compatible format and stream it via upnp to the n900 in question...
Everything up to actually "seeing" proper results on the n900 should work.
The applicable transcoding parameters of PleXBMC may not be enough to do it properly for what the n900 needs.
Transcoding and upnp-ing on the fly will put a wee bit of stress on your pc...it will run a bit quicker trying to do all that work and throw it at your n900...but the transcoding nxx0 for mediacoder I have isn't something hideously intensive in requirements...so it shouldn't be so bad for PleXBMC...

My suggestion is...
download and install mediacoder (free-free...there is a donation/purchase pop up...doesn't mean that you get "more" of anything other than that the pop-up stops bugging you after every so many transcodings if you donate/buy it...but hey not so bad)
add the n8x0 mediacoder preset
and at least "LOOK" at what exact presets are needed to have full screen video and audio running on the nxx0 and try to apply the same parameters to PleXBMC ...If you can't ...my guess is...it won't work...or work properly..

This solution may or may not work.
This is completely untested
It may contain peanuts, drive you mad, make you wish you'd never been born, rape your gerbil, etc...
http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:PleXBMC

There appears to be quite a bit of movement in transcoding in Kodi this past year ...

Never used Kodi on my Pandora as UPnP server - if someone is interested I can try it out though.
It works fine as mediaplayer for all kind of sources including low quality streams - 720p and 1080p is too demanding.
https://boards.openpandora.org/topic...a-xbmc/?page=1

Personally not interested to use Kodi on my N900 (screen too small and battery life), but you can see what is possible on very similar hardware if you check out the Pandora thread.

hm
actually
again a thought came to me...
instead of the cost in setting up a server for transcoded film etc..for a xbmc/kodi repo.

transcode film (easy I've got thousands of films transcoded in storage ..a typical 1 1/2 hour film takes up less than 300mb in nxx0 transcoded size)
up them to an applicable torrent provider (negating the cost overhead)
using either P2P or Torrent Streamer on xbmc/kodi on n900 and find the transcoded nxx0 films available ...and that should work fine.
The least cost, time, effort, system stress... method I can think of to provide streaming film via xbmc/kodi to not just "a" n900 ...but anyone's n900...everyone's n900...
and for those who simply wish to download the torrent transcoded film and transfer it to device and play it via xbmc or other media player on nxx0 that would be applicable too...
