No. Maemo5 on N8x0 is just a nice sideeffect of what we're doing. Mer is 'MaEmo Reconstructed' and we try to provide a fresh view on the Maemo platform. As I've said before, a pure backport project would die out as more people upgraded their HW.

I expect to see Mer on RX-51 too.

Maemo5 release consequences for Mer:
* Open theme template (yay)
* No more waiting for SDK releases and big breaking changes
* Upstream is not so stressed anymore
* We can finally see how the UI is supposed to look
* More attention about the Maemo platform(see people wanting Maemo5 on Eee pc)

Besides that - business as usual. After 1.0 we switch our focus to Harmattan.

Thanks again for all the work on Mer and I realize it can be difficult addressing multiple concerns.

Following up on this thread:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=30915

and the hardware status here:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Mer/Status

and seeing there is no D-pad or some HW buttons on RX-51 (and perhaps Fremantle will not support or advocate same),

is Mer committed to supporting these and other HW features for N8x0, Smart Q5, and future devices?

Re d-pad.. it's cursor buttons from developer POV. Even though rx-51 doesn't have menu button/esc, it is still supported in the libraries. We already use ESC in Mer for dialogs

In the fremantle libraries or Mer libraries (or both)?

And how about the zoom/fullscreen HW buttons? I sense that the new Maemo 5 UI is moving away from these elements (maybe I'm wrong). Will Mer continue to support them?

Fremantle libs. Zoom? zoom's removed? Again - Fullscreen button is a F-button from app perspective. Right now we don't have Fremantle hildon-desktop so we just go with what works..

It's a difficult discussion really. Mer UI would probably be usable with similar set of buttons like N900 and remaining ones could be shortcuts.
