While your phone is open, try to put contact fluid on the connector...

Try to reinstall the camera-ui from terminal in root.

code :

devel-su
password :rootme

apt-get --reinstall install camera-ui

it will ask for confirmation and type Y and hit enter.

A year back I had similar camera issues. A friend who had worked in Nokia with N9 solved it by chenging the system to SDK mode and back. This might not be of help with the persistent problem here, but perhaps for others.

I'm starting to think that it's a software issue rather than hardware.

Tried that, but still I get the same issue.

How do I go abouts doing this?

If sdk mode is what I think it is, you need flasher. Ensure you are running flasher with privileges (administrator/sudo). Enter this code, connect phone, and it will set to r&d mode.
Code:
flasher --enable-rd-mode --set-rd-flags=no-lifeguard-reset
Disconnect, boot. You will see some extra info on boot screen.

To undo it, enter this in flasher, connect phone, then disconnect and reboot. It will all be back to normal.
Code:
flasher --disable-rd-mode
You should attempt to run the camera in r&d mode and after you exit r&d mode just to make sure

I use this all the time when I break a css file and my homescreen stops working while I am developing themes :P
