The N900 can't detect micro SD cards without the battery cover
I don't know if this is a software or hardware limitation.

I managed to accidently 'install' mine in such a way that it looked good, it was inside the cover etc, but it wasn't actually making contact, had another go and got it right this time.

If memory cards keep getting smaller at the same rate, in 2020 we'll need a microscope to find them

On the back of the cover is a very small magnet, if it isn't there the N900 thinks the back cover is open.

yes Little Hangleton was way quicker than me
but indeed check if the small magnet is still in place or the MicroSD card will not work.
you can see it (or a hole if it's missing) when you open the kickstand.

I can't figure out for the life of me why Nokia used such crappy glue behind that magnet.

Even if your magnet is still in place, it's probably a good idea to pull it off, clean out the rubber cement that Nokia used and replace it with some super glue.

Have you checked whether the magnet has gone missing?
