Finally! After hours of struggle, success. Here's the noob how-to for others who will undobtedly feel my pain.

* Make sure you are upgraded to latest firmware - do this on the Nokia site, have the n810 charged, not plugged into the charger, .net 2.0 on your Windoze PC, etc.
* From application manager, while on-line, browse for and install the OpenSSH client/server apps . It prompted me to change the root pwd; I did so and WROTE IT DOWN.
* Open the built-in X-term app, and enter:
ssh localhost -l root ( the -l is a lower-case "el" )
login - yaaay!
(Alternative method - even easier, but OpenSSH is still a very useful tool: get EasyRoot from here

After installing, just type "root" from the Xterm promt. )


Finally I can ping things!
