advanced-systemui (0.2.8)
  • volume muting
  • 127 brightness levels
  • settings to allow zero brightness or switch between 5 and 127 levels
  • brightness is always bound to one of the hardware keys groups
  • dimmed status and current brightness below user-defined brightness value
  • long press lock button now blanks when lock setting is unchecked
  • might fix the redraw problem after notifications or windows partially cover ASUI

The new brightness levels are automatically enabled but can be disabled with gconf-editor. N810 owners will need to use gconf-editor to allow zero brightness.

Lock button can now blank no matter what the control panel setting is at but does have different behavior (blanking).

I haven't heard back from mcow but if the test binary works then this release will also work without any setting changes.

so far so good. I wonder tho, do the deb restart asui after a update? Seems i need to do so manually right now.

You should have it so when you turn to flight mode it turns wifi and bluetooth off. I don't know why when I turn to flight mode I would ever need wifi or bluetooth on, since offline mode disables their use.

It does restart but I think something is causing ASUI to crash and DSME isn't restarting it.

Flight mode button tells MCE to change to flight mode which then turns off wifi and bluetooth causing both to send signals that ASUI uses to update the interface. Both red marks should switch to gray almost immediately after pressing the flight mode button.

They don't. And pushing mute is very difficult, you have to be very precise. Audio was unloaded but I still got my email chime.

Do you have powerlaunch installed or something else that might change MCE's behavior?

And pushing mute is very difficult, you have to be very precise.
The click boundary extends from the top of the value to the bottom of the volume box (40x40 pixel box). It will be 60x44 in the next release but it also suffers from the same delayed update problem that everything else has so you may be clicking it but X doesn't update the window to show the change and you think you didn't click it.

The dsp, esd and media-server services can't be unloaded (yet) so sound will continue to work for some applications. This is why the audio widget always has a used memory value. Wifi is the same way.

Every time I update advanced-systemui, I have to remove battery to reboot - neither short click nor long click on power button does nothing. Did I overlook some important recommendations? I own N800.

if you have rootsh installed, then open a terminal, get root access by entering root, and then enter /etc/init.d/advanced-systemui restart.

I have stated some problems I have had before but I'll just put them into one post:
  • Brightness and Volume should be draggable. It's pretty hard to hit brightness of one or a volume of one. Wish it was like Advanced-Power/Backlight
  • Mute doesn't mute everything. That's a killer because I need to mute my tablet in my classes, and hearing the chime is unacceptable.
  • Flight mode should turn off WiFi and Bluetooth (and possibly GPS). I don't know if it's just mine or something, but when I turn on flight mode it just makes it so I am not connected to wifi and bluetooth is 'off', but the modules are still in memory.
  • The volume mute button is very, very difficult to press. You should also have it so that until you unmute it, you can't move the audio bar, because when I'm trying to hit mute, i might hit it once and then one more time, and I missed, so it unmutes it since it's so easy to hit the volume bar.
  • Perhaps the WiFi box should show the network you are connected to. Having the... UUID... looking thing isn't very useful at all.
  • Perhaps put GPS coordinates in the GPS box? Or put GPS and the green dot into one box. It is hard to tell what box does what. You can probably just extend the box into a bigger space so it's one big box or just leave it blank till you figure out something to fill it with

With these bugs fixed this would be a killer app. You should also somehow put at the end of an install/update that you should issue a command to restart asui, if it doesn't already. Having to reboot is not fun. My tablet reboots enough on it's own (like 4 times a day... my battery life is going down the toilet)
Great software, just needs a bit more polish not polish sausage (although I could use some right now... dinner time)
