I know that this kind of "problem" was already posted in this forum. But I had not found any final solution. I wonder if there is a way to record a high quality sound using N900. I mean if there is a possibilty of connecting external stereo microphone and using software eg. Audacity or similiar. If anyone has experience in doing that kind of things please help me.

There are a few sound recording solutions. Orecchiette stands out above the rest. I suggest you check it out.

There is no reason why you can't connect a microphone to the headphone jack. You may have to use some sort of breakout lead to get the connections on the right TRRS.

I'd go with above software wise.

I forgot to mention though that the headphones socket mic is mono only. You may need to use a BT mic if you want stereo.

Actually, I really haven't tested recording bluetooth audio in Orecchiette yet (although I think it should work). Also, I think I'm only recording a single channel of audio; I'll have to see what needs to be done to record in stereo!

Well, browsing through the world of high-end microphones is kind of eye-opening. For the first thing, there doesn't seem to be any sort of stereo bluetooth microphone.

Most of the portable stereo microphones I can find (example) are tied to special devices designed for stereo audio input (like personal audio recorders or camcorders).

I've found a few stereo microphones for the iPhone (example), but they all connect directly to the data port on the phone (as the mic input for the iPhone is also mono-only).

And it seems the high-end stereo microphones are either tied to USB or to more esoteric recording studio equipment...

I'm beginning to suspect that acquiring stereo input is a bit more complicated than I had thought.

It isn't just a matter of the "physik" end of it being complicated...

Instead of me talky-talky-blah-blah-blah..for pages...and I just KNOW you'd really rather me blather on...
But I'll spare you all that Cop.

Stereo ain't always what you want with microphones...
mono can do ...it depends what you "out" and how you do it more than anything...
Mono is just as great...
Also you could [possibly] do 2 mono mics ..a left and right going in and you have the potential for the stereo out you wish...
there are a variety of options you could do...
it depends on the effect you are wishing to achieve...

there....
that's all the talky-talk I'll do before your eyes start bleeding from my ramblings..
here looky-loo at this for example...it may help...

Well now, if we stick to mono microphones, GStreamer provides a wide range of options for manipulating audio data. I guess the only limit would be the raw data being provided by the N900 itself; I'm not sure where to find the exact statistics for what the N900's microphone port (or bluetooth hardware) can handle...

Exactly...being able to "manipulate" the incoming data is far more important...it allows for more latitude...

As far as attempting to "create" stereo sound utilizing 2 mono mics simultaneously ...
there is always this ...

I've used such connectors in the past...
It does depend on the "how" you can make the n900 recognize both inputs simultaneously
also there are connectors such as this...
