Speaking of Mer, why is it in the alternative section anyway? Isn't it going to be the upgrade to Maemo once it is finalized? Shouldn't it be in the OS like the previous Maemo releases?

I think it's actually a hybrid. Freemantle is the next maemo OS. But Mer is for the nx00 tablets (since Freemantle is based off new hardware and backporting patches and what not for the older hardware is more difficult).

You need the VMDK image for virtualbox. http://stskeeps.subnetmask.net/mer/0...-v0.9.vmdk.zip
Download the file linked to above and then unzip it.

Here is Xcompmrg running on Mer 0.11 testing version. 
First i put on only the basic fade-effect, then shadows and oter stuff.
With all the effects, it's laggy. That's because there's no Hardware Acceleration at all.
