Just stumbled upon this awesome Kickstarter project which already raised an amazing ~440.000 $ in only 10 days while the goal was only 40.000 $!
While this projekt is aimed at Android devices, I wondered if it could work on our N9/N900s too. The Kickstarter page says the API is free for backers, but I only found it for the 1000$ pledge. If porting the app is too cumbersome I think it should be doable with simple scripts.

Use case examples:

What do you guys think, will this fly on our devices?

If its like normal button in headsets there is code to use it as camera button and much more if you want.

Edit: I have parts that I could make one easy, maybe few mm higher but still usable.

I would guess that a button like that could also be handy for mapping a function to the screen in webOS games without the need to have the keyboard open?

$17 is too expensive for what it is. Something that costs less than a dollar to manufacture shouldn't cost more than $10. A fair price would be $5.

Call me a cheap bastard, but that's how I perceive it.
And if I did have the money, I would splash on it simply because I need the Aux port free.

$440.000!!

it shows how much hardware buttons are still needed on the sides of phones.

Still stupid manufacturers removed camera buttons because the iPhone did it.

I still think it's pretty much the same with other features (cough cough hardware keyboard)

Though i agree, when have you ever paid a 'fair' price for a piece of tech?

Sale price has nothing to do with production cost, build quality and the like.
It is purely and entirely dictated by what the market is willing to pay.

440 000$ gathered for a project implementing button doing short on two pin of 3.5mm jack through a set resistor, eh? Really?

Well, I suppose we have seen even more strange kickstarter pinches, but what amazes me most, is that they actually *wanted* 40 000$ for designing production of thing like that.

Agreed on qwazix point about need for hardware buttons, though.

Impressive, the guys really made their fortune by this...
They've raised just under 700 000 dollars, with pre-order by almost 30 000 people.

Quick calculation by the exact numbers shows that they are selling the gizmo with 24 dollars a piece. You can order them at around 10 cents a piece in batches of 10000 from any respectable chinese subcontractor, which means when you substract the packing and handling costs, they still made dough to last lifetime with modest living.

Not bad, eh

Now instead of complaining, come up with a similar money-making idea
