I got the phone! And lo and behold it's build 14_161107. (But just wait...)

Anyway, I thought I could just go ahead and install the "particular" TWRP file mentioned here:
https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Ada...ishOS_for_onyx

After OEM-unlocking I boldly went ahead.

Code:
$sudo fastboot flash recovery recovery-twrp.img
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
sending 'recovery' (16384 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.623s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 0.318s]
finished. total time: 0.942s
So far, so good. But what do I do next. When I run "sudo fastboot reboot" the phone starts Android again. When I power off and, then, hold down POWER and VOL DOWN (i.e. the lower one), I get what looks like the stock recovery (1+ logo plus a choice of Chinese or English).

A little searching gave me this idea (after repeating the command above):

Code:
$ sudo fastboot boot recovery-twrp.img
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 0.619s]
booting...
FAILED (remote: dtb not found)
finished. total time: 0.657s
Failed...

So, I checked "about phone" again to find the OxygenOS version, which is 3.1.4.

Does that mean I have to take the scenic route and install the current TWRP first?

If so, could you please help me with these stupid questions (sorry for asking again):

1) Is the oos2.2.1-x.zip you mentioned identical with the OnePlusXExtraPartitions-2.2.1-X-0.zip I downloaded from https://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...91&postcount=1 (I got there through the link you provided - https://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...91&postcount=1 )? I know it probably is the one you meant. But I just want to be absolutely sure not to cause damage by accidentally having picked the wrong file.

2) For step 5 do I use the TWRP version linked to from the merproject's wiki https://forum.xda-developers.com/dev...t/dl/?id=15644 or the one from the general instructions here https://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...3&postcount=45 ? I assume it's the merproject's one.

3) Do I need to adjust any settings in TWRP at any point, like erasing parts? There was something about this in the LinearOS instructions, but it seemed confusing to me.

4) Between steps 3 and 4 in nieldk's instructions (3. flash the oldbootloader (OOS2) - 4. Reboot to recovery again (from TWRP menu)): Do I need to boot into Android? I assume not.

I am grateful for any help you can offer!

@dubliner - congratulations! I'll let the ones who know more about 1+X Android versions to reply. It seems that you would have to "just" downgrade. I would expect that 1+X would have instructions somewhere on how to do that. Hopefully, someone can give specific instructions and help you out.

Don't forget to check that all works in Android - camera, phone functions, GPS, BT, and whatever you have there.

I have updated the instructions on post #6 http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...77&postcount=6 to be a bit more clear on how to do this

Thank you so much for your help!!! I really appreciate it.

Anyway, I hope I'll get around to finally installing SFOS later today.

One thing, though. When flashing, what do I need to erase? I know tutorials on this may be plentyful on the web, but many of them are confusing and contradictory (at least as far as I can tell).

Edit: To illustrate what I mean allow me to quote from the Lineage installation guidelines (which I assume are similar to our purposes):

https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/onyx/install

Quote:
4. Go back to return to main menu, then tap Wipe.
5. Now tap Format Data and continue with the formatting process. This will remove encryption as well as delete all files stored on the internal storage.
6. Return to the previous menu and tap Advanced Wipe.
7. Select the Cache and System partitions to be wiped and then Swipe to Wipe.

Are all these steps required, optional or in fact detrimental?

I know I'm getting annoying. But another question (apart from the wiping) has crossed my mind.

The file OnePlusXExtraPartitions-2.2.1-X-0.zip is really small compared to all other images (a little over 33 MB). And the archive does not seem to contain a boot.img file (no idea if that is even relevant).

The file suggested on https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Ada...ishOS_for_onyx named OnePlusOxygen_14_OTA_010_all_201604021001_54d6bba8 f7d84502.zip is much larger (798 MB). Would that be a better choice?

I am just terrified of locking myself out or bricking the phone, hence my trepidation.

Just wondering if anyone has made the same observation: The bluetooth buttons (play and pause) seem to be ignored (Onyx running beta-10). I tested this with Talefish.

Could this issue be similar to what velox described here: https://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=100505&page=4
