I cannot believe that years and years of good dialogue were just flushed away with the old final countdown...

So to commemorate the new one...
Lift a glass to Dave...(He liked a good beer)

And as far as finality in countdowns go...
Lets pour another for Rutger Hauer...
A great talent...
and a great person.
Rest in peace .

I did not know that Rutger Hauer passed.

He was one of those actors like Christopher Walken. If you imagine role to be played by someone like Rutger Hauer, your only choice is Rutger Hauer.

I know ...eh?
he was a damn good actor.
I have pretty much all he has done.
right down to the episodes he starred in...in Lexx
Every time he is in something, he does the part justice.
He has no need to be an alpha on the screen, his presence and disposition fill the screen plenty without demanding it.
I've seen some interviews and such of him as well..
and he is just a great, kind, intelligent and thoughtful person.
Liked him a lot.
Rutger, like so many of the old school, are just downright good actors.
I intend on having a binge watch of Rutger movies shortly.
Currently I am binge watching everything by Michael Caine.
(Always enjoy "get Carter" ..gritty film)
Once done, I will sit with Rutger.
My film vault is extensive.
Name the actor and I have a section with his/her films ...most likely.
(every time I visit those films I get drawn afterwards to watch one of the supporting actors swathe of films ...so it is a never ending cycle of good films for me)

And now, to settle in...
and..
as the great Canadian professor of film and media would show, for decades (on our version of PBS), before the saturday night film started...
time to start the projector, which casts magic shadows on the wall...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFYYj4NQyoM

ah ..
good old times ...grew up on actual informative, educational, enlightening and entertaining television...
Some innocent retro ...for everyone.

definitely ...
Walken is great ....ain't he now?

Loved him in Brainstorm...
He played opposite Natalie Wood ...it was her last role if memory serves...before her tragic death from drowning ..

Not a countdown but I'd like to share it anyway as a reminder of the difference between the British and European way of seeing the world. (Before that reminder, another reminder: I live in the UK but was born and raised elsewhere and I observe the difference daily and it frustrates me to no end.)

I was doing a European driving trip with three kids and was cut off from the news for a week which was quite refreshing, but as I left the kids with my family and set off on my long solo drive back home, I switched on the radio to keep me awake. It was some local station: no big talks; only music, commercials and a short news bulletin once an hour.

It was on one of those news bulletins when I heard about an overflowing dam at Whaley Bridge near Manchester, UK. The whole bulletin took altogether maybe 2 minutes and yet they managed to find a few seconds to squeeze some local news from some obscure country at the back of beyond. Not even a major news like some terrorist attack, a big natural disaster or an important political event. Just some local news.

Our European readers will probably wonder, "so what?". They are used to European media mentioning curiosities from other countries. It's part of normal, day-to-day life. But as someone living in the UK for 20+ years, who got used to how self-obsessed the country is and how non-existent news coverage from other parts of the world is there, this was a major "wow!" moment.

No wonder that a country so isolated from the outside world can acquire a rather twisted image of itself.

Interesting that news stuff. In Finland it seems there are as many news from other countries as there are from Finland. Small low esteem country so wanting to know what they do in the big world. But this I have really liked in Finland school system: english teaching started when 10 years old, swedish when about 13 (or you can choose which starts first. German (or french or russia and in some spanish) at the age of 15. Geography teaching around the world as well as history and religions. The basics which law requires you to learn really give a good view of what is and where. And you can quite well trust the news (even though they are western news so there should be a proper channel for the other sides point of views) and you do not need to be afraid of the cops and law. And I like the gun policy.
