Can we get Miracast working with the N9? Is it technically possible?

To have compatibility with this HD-10 would be awesome!

Technically: maybe.
Practically: nope.

Some people probably have ported Miracast-compatible ROMs to an Android device which wasn't shipped with the device. The result.... incompatible pairing.

By ROM, do you mean a binary-only OS or programs? I don't think we want anything like that.


The link says "Not Found" but I believe it is somewhere out there, which is great news!
Do you think there is anything that would be insufficient hardware-wise?

Yes, OpenWFD was succeeded by MiracleCast http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/miracle/ from the same developer. I only remembered the OpenWFD presentation at FOSDEM.

MiracleCast requires wpa_supplicant which seems to be available or can be compiled from the sources for the N9. For other prerequisites I have no idea but DBus should be fine though.

Having a working Wifi-Direct functionality would be already quite useful as someone e.g. could implement direct file transfer via Wifi-P2P between N9 and Android smartphones.

Btw, for Miracast screen sharing is there HDMI resolution required? N9 has only FWVGA.

Personally I don't feel an urgent need for Miracast as DNLA/UPnP works fine and there is legacy Video out available although mirroring the display onto a desktop screen would be nice.

By ROM... I mean like a flavour/distro of Android OS.
There are devices that technically CAN do Miracast, but were never granted the ability from the OEM in the first place.

There's people who port custom ROMs from other Android devices to these Android devices. In all* cases, Miracast never works and the camera (until alot of development) and some other sensors and functions.

Its because Miracast has to run some sort of certification during the pairing and it has to remain active throughout the connection. Its there for good reason, but its still a wip. And its implementation is very "beta" on Android and basically non-existent on other devices.

Miracast is pretty much dead... unless some company (not Intel) can lift its mantel
